We were walking on Sansome St. when we saw a few people descending the steps. As we were looking up, one of the people that had just finished his climb down said we should go up. LOTS of steps but he said he walks them twice a week so we decided to try. Fortunately we were in no hurry so... More

Took this route when leaving CoitTower -- glad we did. Amazing residential area build on the side of a hill. Can't imagine doing these steps every day to get to my house. Great experience.

We stumbled upon the steps when we decided to descend from Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill by a different route than we took going up. As we were walking along the street winding its way down the hill, we noticed the stairs and decided to see if it was a shortcut down the hill. It was, of course, and only... More

Absolutely beautiful. Walk right through gorgeous lush gardens and see incredible views of the bay. The walk up is slow going, but definitely worth it.

These stairs are amazing but I suggestion a descending down the stairs to embarcaderos area of SF City shore pier area. we ascended and it was tough but we made to tour the Coit tower at the top climb hill for our gift to ourselves. Wonderful city views to witnessed there.

Hate to live there, if no other reason than groceries, but what a great view of SF that not everyone gets to see.

If you are looking for the parrots of Telegraph Hill, this is one of the best places for an elusive glance. We saw them early evening as the sun was just starting to set, swooping in large flocks all around us. Amazing experience!

The Filbert Steps are stairways that rise in three sections from Sansome Street to Coit Tower. Great views, beautiful landscapes and a good workout. Nearby are the equally amazing Greenwich Street Stairs. Take Filbert Steps up to Coit Tower and the Greenwich stairs back down.

Although San Francisco appears to be a concrete jungle when viewed from the top of Coit tower, this walk provides both exercise and a huge dose of oxygen. there are a great number of plants surrounding the steps making it cool and fragrant. This is a much better alternative to get to the tower than driving. if you are up... More

A gorgeous walk up or down from Coit Tower, through the yards of funky SF homes. If you're lucky, you'll see the parrots of Telegraph Hill.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
