Nice way to get down from the Coit Tower to the Embarcadero! Take the “Greenwich Steps” down to Montgomery Street (go careful), then 2 mins along Montgomery to the “Filbert Steps”. Admire the delightful gardens and homes on your way down (Whilst wondering how the residents manage to get their shopping home!) Pity the steps at the bottom of the... More

I'll admit I was thankful to experience this steep set of Steps going downwards - we had climbed up to Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill, from the other side, and that was, for me at least, quite challenging. There's a distinctive character to this route : wooden Steps for much of the way, residential Houses as you go, charming Plant... More

Easy to park on the street at the bottom - pay and display. The walk up isn't that far, passing really nice looking houses. Even saw some parrots hanging out in the trees. Good way to access the Coit Tower, but worth doing regardless.

We love to walk and SF is a walking city, although we had bought a three-day pass so used a lot of public transport. We headed to the North Beach and then walked to Coit Tower up the Filbert Steps, among other hills, then the bus to fisherman's wharf.

If your camera is like mine, taking photos looking into the sun doesn't capture the colors like what you see. And there's a lot of good views as you ascent Telegraph Hill. So plan your up/down with the best Sun angle. That's a lot of climbing to not get good photos! The 3rd tier of Filbert is full of color.

It is a little bit challenging, but the experience is well worth it. Very unique. I think it gives one a feel for the real San Francisco. I never go to SF with someone new that I don't take them here. Go in the morning, walk down the other side and take Grant to Chinatown and have lunch at Hunan... More

Pretty way down the cliff to the Ferry Building area, with lovely houses and gardens which you pass through. Very quiet. You feel as if you are sneaking a peek ! Need to have reasonable fitness thought as there must easily be 250 steps.

We walked down the Filbert steps top to bottom. Beautiful gardens. A nice way to see an otherwise hidden gem of San Francisco. LOTS of stairs.

The climb is not bad, there are places to rest. Even grandma with her hip replacement can do it! I had expected a bit more though. Yes, the parrots are there but most of the gardens are very neglected and don't look too nice. At the top you find a very nice view of the bay and cruise ships. From... More

Walk down from the top of telegraph hill at the coit tower. Enjoy the parrot flock and hummingbirds in the beautiful gardens.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
