A wonderful old San Francisco gem! Visit. They built a small chapel next door in 7/8 scale called the Portziuncula, an exact but scale replica of the one in Assisi built by Saint Francis himself. This church has gorgeous paintings inside and the Mass is always reverent and meaningful. So pretty! An eye and heart full.

When I travel abroad, I always find a cathedral for a few reasons, for peace, culture, and to prey. This shrine to St Francis is amazing. It's beautiful, quiet, the stained glass tells stories. It's definitely worth a visit.

My wife and I visited this church in the North Beach area. It has an exact replica of the St. Francis Grotto in it. The person showing us around the shrine was very informative and polite. The detail of the shrine is absolutely amazing! We also visited the church next to the shrine and also took in all the sites... More

A little gem of 19th century taste in the middle of a busy intersection. Quiet and gleaming white aisles allow you to imagine what it was like here 150 years ago.

I love old churches and this one was a wonderful break filled with peace and rest from the busy streets and all the walking we had been doing in among the surrounding neighborhoods. I loved the stain glass and the stories that the art work told.

Please take a break and enjoy a moment of peace in this cathedral, when they are not having service. Appreciate the architecture and I like to peacefulness that comes with it.

Loving the story of Saint Francis of Assisi and what he stood for, made this visit even more memorable. One of the greatest experiences is to visit the replica of the chapel which is next door. I spoke to one of the Franciscan Monks for over half an hour. Truly an experience I will not forget. The gift shop is... More

A beautiful building, which provides sanctuary from the city outside. Worth visiting if you are in this area.

You really need to take the time to walk through the church . It is so beautiful. I love the paintings on the ceilings. You will be awe struck when you look down the pews to the front. Words can not describe the beauty and peace.

Stop in - to see this grand church. No longer a parish and supported only through donations. Feels spiritual and will touch your heart.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
