Worth a visit if you're in Little Italy, purely because of the oddity of its address. I found out that Joe Dimaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their wedding photos taken on the steps of this church (although they didn't get married there).

The outside is outstanding but the inside will leave you in awe of the beautiful alter and the beautiful stained glass. A must see.

Have passed the cathedral in many times. Wished there was a pamphlet describing the building and its history,

SS Peter and Paul is a very pretty church outside, but the inside is simply magnificent. As to the outside, it is the largest and most striking building on Lincoln Square. If you are there in the morning, if the light hits it right (which happens fairly often on nice days), the gold cross at the top simply glows. I... More

I'm not sure how we ended up here, but I think we had just come down from Coit Tower and were changing buses when while crossing Washington Square Park we took a detour and M'Lady said that this was where Marilyn Munroe got married - actually it was a blessing after a civil ceremony to Joe DiMaggio. At the time... More

The stained glass and altar was stunning. Really glad I made the walk. Must visit for anyone interested in architecture or who want somewhere peaceful to visit/pray/reflect. Candles are $5 each to light and understandably go to the upkeep of the Church.

Grew up in the Bay Area and whenever we come back if we have the chance, we like to visit this church. Not a regular church goer but this is just incredible. The architecture and feeling inside is beyond amazing. Located on Washington Square in the Little Italy neighborhood - and that address - really ?? 666 Filbert St. -... More

A very unusual street address. Anyways this is a nice cathedral on Washington Square. If you get there for mass you will notice that it is in Italian. Nice building.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
