A marvelous desert playground!
Aug 2021
Big Bend is vast, but unless you are here to hike the trails and camp out in the desert, the Ross Martin Scenic Drive will be the place to spend most of your time. On a bright and sunny day, if you start down to the river early in the morning, and don't start your return until late in the afternoon, you will be able to enjoy the play of light and shadow across this magnificent desert landscape to the full. Here, as on the nearby Fort Davis scenic loop, it's the time of day that determines much of what you see. We've tried to score this point in the accompanying photos.

A Memorable Drive
Apr 2021
The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is one of the major experiences in the National Park. Its is a fairly long drive on a very good road. When we visited there wasn't much traffic and therefore very enjoyable. There are many places to stop and savoir the scenery. We visited in Spring so there were many flowering cacti to view along the way. Quite unusual for people from the northeast to see this flowering.

Beautiful Drive!!!
May 2021 • Couples
We really enjoyed the drive today. The cacti and assorted shrubs were just beautiful and many were bursting with blooms. There is so much to see in all directions. Be sure and stop and read the plaques along side the road. We saw a rattlesnake stopped on the road- we watched the creature for quite a while. Loved it!!!

Photos do not do it justice

There is no way to adequately show this vast open space in photos. Driving and stopping at the scenic outlooks was truly awesome. You can get an idea of how big an ocean is, since this was once underwater.

Big Bend National Park
Apr 2021
Cutting through the heart of Big Bend National Park, this 30-mile drive on a well-paved road snakes up, down, and around the western slopes of the Chisos Mountains and through the Chihuahuan Desert. There are several places to pull over and stretch your legs, including Sotol Vista Overlook, the Castolon Historic District, and several trailheads. And saving the best for last where the blacktop ends: the spectacular Santa Elena Canyon.

Amazing Drive, Especially at First Light
Mar 2021
For me simply driving trough Big Bend was amazing. However, the road from the Chisos to Santa Elena is a highlight, the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. I did have the chance to drive this down and back to see Santa Elena at dawn. The dive is beautiful and it changes with the sun. The northern portion is a surprisingly significant drop with great views of the Chisos, the Mule Ears an Cerro Castallen, butte near Tuff Canyon. Some of my favorite pictures of the trip are dawn outlines of these features. The other amazing thing is Santa Elena at the bottom. Here the road levels along the Rio Grand and brings you right next to the awesome cliff that create the canyon. It is one thing to see these in a picture or from a distance. However, as my friend said when drove along the river "Dang" because here you did not simply see the cliffs, you could feel them lording over you. Either way, this is an amazing road that you have to drive when you are in Big Bend. If you can do it at first light.

Beautiful sights
Jan 2021 • Couples
We took this scenic drive on our first day in the park, and it did not disappoint! We plan to go back another day because there isn’t enough time to stop and see all the sights in one day. The Sublette/Dorgan farms were a treat. There is a mile or two hike back there but we’ll worth the walk

Nice view points at Hommer Wilson Ranch & Mule Ears

Great short drive with plenty of viewing points if you have more than a day at the park. Hommer Wilson Ranch & Mule Ears are notable view points.

Definitely scenic and worth the drive
Oct 2020
We spent a few hours one afternoon in the park driving down Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, stopping at many of the viewpoints and short trails along the way. I believe that he was one of the early park superintendents who knew the area well and designed this drive to show off some of the highlights. It is definitely worth taking your time to stop and explore some of the pullouts as you drive it.

The road leads past Castolon Historic District and then ends at Santa Elena Canyon. You can turn around and drive back the same way, or use the dirt Old Maverick Rd to shave off distance if you're heading to the west/Terlingua. We did this and I'm not sure that I recommend it. We had a sedan and the road was passable, but so bumpy that it was uncomfortable at times, and overall probably not much faster than going back around on the road.

This park is really about the beauty of the varied landscapes, the flora, and the fauna. This scenic drive highlights the best the park has to offer. This is a must do on your trip to Big Bend National Park.
