After reading a great article in Metropolis magazine about this liberal arts college started by the Albers from the Bauhaus in Germany, I decided to take a peek at the museum. The current exhibition is the work of Zola Marcus - great work - also met a gentleman working the museum who was very knowledgeable and interesting. The library in... More

We kind of happened upon this place due to watching a movie about Black Mountain College. The art is beautiful, kind of different and neat. Had a great time looking around and staff is very friendly.

Black Mountain College was a pioneering art school several miles up the road from Asheville, where post war refugees from Germany's Bauhaus mingled with emerging luminaries of America's modern art movement. 2 small spaces across the street from one another house rotating exhibits and archives of the school, faculty, and student art. Be sure to watch the little 10 min video about the history of the college. Amazing place. Wish it still existed! The community there included famous artists, writers, dancers, buckminster fuller - all at one little crazy campus! They were ahead of their time, I think. The museum is small but free and worth a stop.

I learned so much during my visit....made me wish the experimental college, and all it brought with it, was still with us. The "art" contained herein, left something to be desired....but, I had just come from Black Mountain....so, knowing the college background....it just enriched my experience.

Events and programs also bring the spirit of the college to life. Go and visit the Swannanoa Valley Museum as well for the history of the college and... More

This is a storefront museum for an experimental college that closed in the 50s after about 20 years. They had quite a faculty. Be sure to see the video. http://www.blackmountaincollege.org/
