Top ways to experience New England Aquarium
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.

    Had a great time
We had a great time at this aquarium. I think if you go into it with expectations of what you want to see by looking at the website and what they offer then you will not be disappointed. We went in March -it was busy, but it was not crowded. I think they could’ve offered more items in the gift shop for adults – most of it is geared towards children.

    Small but beautiful
Our visit here was about three hours as we like to take pictures of everything. It was very clean, plenty of restrooms, reasonably priced and the animals looked happy. The penguin display is large and the seals had a rare one. There were not a lot of people to answer questions but we did find a staff member and she was great at answering questions and even walked with us a bit to another exhibit we had a question about. It was a nice way to spend some time and after we took a walk down the port.

    Beautiful aquarium
We got to the aquarium right at 9 am when they opened. We bought our tickets online ahead of time which allowed us to get right in at 9 am and not have to wait in line. The seals and penguins were a huge hit with our family. The aquarium was clean, lots of interesting things to see, and the staff was very nice. The only complaint we had was that it was quiet until about 10 am and then it was overly crowded to the point it was difficult to see exhibits. We stayed for almost two hours and saw everything. However, in the end, it was hard to enjoy the exhibits. I would suggest going during the week if you can. It may be less crowded.

    Excellent afternoon visit
I visited 10 years ago and then returned last week. Its expensive to visit but well worth it, the displays are fantastic. As solo adults, we picked a quieter time without so many little ones. Fun for all ages and great for a rainy day!

    Marine Life
This was not the best aquarium I have ever been to, but it was nice and helped to fill a couple hours we had in the afternoon. This is definitely not a place that will take all day to visit. The penguins, seals and sting rays were the highlights. Difficult to identify some of the fish in the tanks and the reading expected at some of the exhibits is not kid friendly. It would be nice if staff was more available to answer questions and provide general education. Aquarium is 4 small floors…5 if you count the top of the large center fish tank, but bathroom and water fountain were only on first floor which was a bit of an inconvenience..

    A nice aquarium
The New England Aquarium was nice. It was packed which made it hard to navigate especially with someone in a wheelchair, but we managed. Did you know, wheelchair bound people get free admission? Neither did I, but was pleasantly surprised. Overall was fun, I would try going on a non rainy day so hopefully it's not as packed.

    Great For Kids
I live aquariums and I do like this one. It’s geared more for kids than I expected but it’s well laid out and easy to get around. I enjoyed the penguins the most. I feel it’s a little pricey - a family of four gets expensive. However it’s worth to check out once.

Great main tank, but that is about it
This review might be a bit unfair as I am from Chicago and the Shedd Aquarium is amazing. The main tank here is amazing! The coral arrangement and sea life in that, about 50-60 foot deep, tank is beautiful. There is a ramp that spirals from top to bottom so you can see the different levels. There is a penguin environment below and all around the tank that is very nice. It was quiet the day we were there and we could easily look into the tank, but if it were busy it could be an issue. Other than the tank, that is about it. There isn’t much else of interest. There is a small pool with three seals.

    Fun aquarium to visit
We chose to go here as it was covered with our GoCity pass. My uncle had visited here and said we should stop in to see it. This was a good recommendation. We were only able to stay for a few hours but it was fun to see. There was so much we didn't see as there was so much. Some of the exhibits had no sea life that we (or anybody else) could see.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I feel like once you’ve seen one aquarium, you’ve seen them all??? It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t stand out either. It was part of the goboston voucher so we checked it out. In the aquarium’s defense, we really aren’t aquarium people, so I’d probably say that if you have the time, swing by and check it out. But if you’re looking for something extraordinary and unique, this isn’t it.

The New England Aquarium has an excellent collection of ocean displays & water tanks, concentrating on New England's bays and the wildlife swimming thru them. The literal centerpiece of the Aquarium is a multi-story plexiglass tank that held fishes that swam at various depths in a reef. The spiral walkway around this tank gives you a chance to see the differences at different depths.

The Aquarium also has a range of side displays & tanks to show the residents of different oceanographic environments. The large displays of seals & penguins were particularly good, particularly during feeding time. An enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

Visited here recently with my sister and we were quite disappointed as it was rated the best aquarium in New England but it was tiny! You walk in and see the penguins and then follow the path up to the top but thats pretty much it. We visited as part of the Boston pass.

When we planned our family trip to Boston, a visit here was a must! I had booked a whale watching tour (departing right next to the New England Aquarium) but decided 4 hours on a boat with a toddler didn't sound fun. Maybe next time...

The aquarium is large enough to keep you occupied for an hour or two without being too overwhelming.

Very well done aquarium. Signage excellent, good sightlines and explanations. Don't miss the 3D movie theater. We saw Secrets of the Sea, and everyone loved it, from age 3 to age. . . well, a lot more. The best nature photography I've ever seen. Ever.

Super high quality exhibit featuring the marine life of the Atlantic Ocean and Boston Harbor area. A great educational experience for everyone. Super nice and friendly. Admission included with the GoCity Pass, so five adults got in at a discount rate (included in the pass purchase) along with other attractions. The Aquarium was the first thing we did once we hit the wharf.

Such a lovely aquarium and very well looked after. Very informative and if you like penguins this is the place to go. Going this time of year it was less busy and comfortable to walk around.
