The Timken specializes in European art, Russian icons and American art. Although small and only on one floor the museum has works by some master artists: Hals, Metsu, Maes, Copley and the only Rembrandt painting in San Diego. It is always free to enter. One could see most of the art work in an hour.

Privately financed Timkin Museum of Art in Balboa Park is always free (unlike the rest of the park's wonderful museums.) We go back regularly and always enjoy the special exhibits, as well as the incredible art collection. We just saw the incredible jeweled ornament collection -- more than 2000 ornaments on display.

so when private collectors make their acquisitions public in a great park (one of 17 museums in balboa park!), it's an interesting thing... this museum has flemish/belgian paintings; russian icons; some american masters and some other european masters - with their party piece (which they make a big thing of) being a 'death of mary' painting... it's free and worth... Timken is small compared to the much larger San Diego Museum of Art next door, but I kind of like that. A superb collection of European masters and Russian icons. Occasional special exhibits, only the best, e.g. Rembrandt. Best of all, FREE due to the generosity of the Putnam and Timken families. The Putnam sisters spent the decades of the... More

The Timken Museum of Art stands out as a modern box structure amidst the ornate Spanish colonial building on the Prado at Balboa Park. And currently (Dec.2016) with Fabrege-like jeweled Xmas ornaments featured this museum looks like an old-fashioned, streamlined jewelry box both inside and out. If you miss this Xmas show, don't skip this museum with many other jewels,... More

This free museum has a great collection of a variety of art. We loved seeing some of the great masters and enjoyed a friendly conversation with the staff at the front desk. There is an option to make a small donation - well worth it. The museum is closed on Monday.

A wonderful collection of American and European paintings, for the most part. The Timkin is a small museum, so it doesn't fee overwhelming to completely cover it in an hour or two. But some really excellent works on display, including a large Rembrandt, but many other outstanding pieces as well. I went on Christmas Eve, and as a special treat,... More

This is a free museum in the Park. There was a wonderful display of intricate Christmas ornaments that were quite beautiful. Although a small collection, it was very good.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that this museum was free! It is a small place and not crowded mid-week. They had a few masters and a good exhibit of Russian Icons. well done!

Do you just wear out in big museums? Do you feel frustrated that your feet are shot before you see half of it? This is the place for you. It is a small museum with only top paintings by the most significant painters of Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, and America. It has only six galleries but those have Guercino, Rubens, Rembrandt,...
