I took the Big rock trail up from big rock park. You take the trail then join the safe but boring access road up to the top of Cowles.
I wish the trail were more covered and, after the road, more interesting.

This is definitely a must do hike in San Diego. The views are simply amazing. I would say medium level difficulty. It took us ~60 minutes to get to the summit and ~45 minutes to get back to our car, with dogs.
