Neighbourhood: Flatiron District
Offering many of city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets- much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighbourhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being the home of a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.

Stunning building - currently under renovation
This was my 8th visit to New York City - my last was 19 years ago - and the Flatiron has always been a favourite of mine so I was so excited to see it again. During the evening, I actually walked past it as it’s shrouded in scaffolding so was almost unrecognisable! During the day - and on a beautifully sunny, crisp wintry day, I sat on a park bench and admired it (obviously still sadly under scaffolding!) Well worth a visit to admire the iconic structure and as it’s in a great and convenient location.

    Beautiful building
A very special and iconic building in Manhattan, which never fails to impressed. We stayed nearby on this visit and it was a joy to see the warm stone of this beautiful building everyday. Actually looks better at night at the moment as there is some netting and scaffolding which is less visible at night.

    Scaffold Clad
I was visiting New York City in October 2023 and the Flat Iron Building was one of the places I wanted to check out whilst I was in the area. Sadly when I got there I discovered that it is under renovation and it was completely covered in scaffolding. I could still make out parts of the building and its striking shape but I could not get any good pictures which I was a little disappointed about. It is in a nice area with a park nearby with plenty of places to sit and admire the passing activity and the architecture. Hopefully soon it will be back to its former glory.

    It’s ok.
One of New York icon building. Mostly walk around the neighborhood. Flatiron district I was here when it was a bit cold. Looks like place is hopping during spring-fall. It’s ok another budget friendly sight seeing place to go.

Fantastic piece of architecture, situated on a narrow crossroads in midtown Manhattan. Easyto get some nice photos from the small park across the road

Construction for ages now. I don't know when they finish their work in order to see this sight properly. Not much going on in winter in that area.

My wife and I have been here before, in 2008 and at that time were actually inside the building. This time were here with another couple on Thursday, December 28, 2023. We did not come here specifically to see the Flat Iron, but for a different tour, The nearby Masonic Lodge. We couldn't go in until 10 AM, so we walked over to the park across the street from the Flat Iron. It is a marvelous work of architecture that wisely uses a triangular shape of otherwise unusable real estate. It sits at the angular sharp intersection of 5th Ave. and 23rd St. near Broadway Ave. From this small park we have a great view of it, though it is currently under renovation and is covered with scaffolding. While in the park, we heard this story told:

Who knows the origin of the phrase, "23 Skidoo" ? **- It was popular in the roaring 20s and this is told of it's beginning. The intersection of 23rd St and Fifth Avenue was known to often be a very windy location as the juncture of the streets created a sort of wind tunnel. In the 1920s this was also a streetcar stop. Many women worked in this area and rode the streetcar. As they disembarked from the streetcar, the wind would catch their long skirts and whip them up exposing their legs. It came to pass that many men became aware of this by word of mouth, and often a sizeable crowd of men would gather at the intersection to catch an unintended view of women's legs. Local police were aggravated by this traffic interference problem, and would come to chase them away. The men would see them coming and shout, "23 skidoo!"

Una parada obligatoria en NYC. Estaba en obras pero aún así disfrutamos de la vista además la zona en que se encuentra es muy agradable, llena de tiendas y zonas para comer. Recomendado!
