SoHo my sound like the hunting call that is responsible for the Soho in London, but this name actually makes a lot of geographic sense. SoHo is "South of Houston Street." Yes, it is pronounced "House-Ton", not like the city in Texas.
My favorite thing about this area is the architecture. While they are all over the city, there is a good concentration of the classic cast iron buildings in this neighborhood. The cover photo on TripAdvisor for this neighborhood is perfect example of this art meets architecture. While midtown is becoming more and more glass, downtown will hopefully retain some of it's historic roots and I really hope buildings like this survive and flourish and gentrification only takes place on the interior and not the exterior. Cobblestone (or Belgian blocks for those friends who are picky) also characterize the area.
Soho is also known for food an art. Balthazar and Dominique Ansel Bakery are likely the most famous in the area but walk in any direction and you are bound to find good food.
Once you are done with the madness of Midtown, I recommend a quick ride on either ACE (blue) or 4/6 (green) to either Spring Street station and stroll through this awesome area.

Great trendy area with so many high end clothing, shoe, and jewelry stores. We love exploring the streets of SoHo. There are several great restaurants in this area, and its close to Chinatown and Little Italy.

There are lots of interesting galleries & restaurants within this area of NYC. Be sure to check area to see which one of them are still open; the Covid shutdowns has led to many now-empty storefronts.

SoHo (an acronym for South of Houston Street) So you can grab coffee and a pastry from one of the many Instagrammable cafes and eateries .Walk back in time, along the cobblestone streets. The city’s most fashionable neighborhood has no shortage of trendy spots for shopping and dining, but careful explorers will find Soho’s true charm in the cobblestone streets, cast-iron architecture, and sweeping lofts and galleries.
A creative vibe established by the neighborhood’s resident artists and the pulse of downtown NYC at your fingertips. A NYC MUST !!!!!!!!

Thoughts on staying in SoHo for first time visitors to NYC? we'll be there 9 days in June 2021 and wondering if I should book a little more north to be with the other tourists. We're both 24 y/o

I love being a bit further from the hustle and bustle of midtown which is enough to turn many people off from New York but it depends on your preferences. If you love to eat and shop, Soho is for you and a short walk to some of the most charming neighborhoods like West Village, as well as the food and overall environment of Chelsea Market, Nolita (you must eat at the Musket Room) and Chinatown
What's best way to get to soho from 49th and lexington?

Hello there,
The subway is the most efficient way to travel from 49th & Lexington providing there are no major repairs or rerouting going on. The #D, #E or #6 train will get you to Soho. The MTA has a website that you can use to plot your trip. You’ll be able to see your options, determine how long it will take to get where you want to go. There’s always Uber which will be more expensive and take more time however the benefit is that you’ll get to see more of the city.
I hope this information helps you.

My partner and I are staying in soho area over New Year's Eve and would like to know the best places to go other than Times Square. Any good local places for a more chilled New Years? Perhaps a pub? Also do you need tickets for such places? TIA

Most anywhere in NYC you should check out advanced reservations, as even places that normally don't have reservations may have a New Year's event. Depends what you like, but Arturos on Houston is a great bar with brick oven pizza. There are hundreds of nooks though, so just get there days in advance and walk around different neighborhoods; SoHo has great places, check out the SoHo grand hotel bar on the 2nd floor.

You can get the subway from Penn Station 34th st and get off at Houston St. From there it's not far to walk to West Broadway

You can walk to Penn Station at the corner of 8th Ave. and 34th St. and go downstairs (follow the signs) to take the C or E subway to Spring St. in Soho. Or, there is the NYC yellow metered taxi, Uber, or Lyft.
Where's a cute little cafe in soho that serves food

Was wondering if scuba diving/snorkeling was available and what the beach is like?

There is no beach..SoHo is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, for being the location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, but is now better known for its variety of shops ranging from trendy upscale boutiques to national and international chain store outlets.
