About
Chelsea Market is a world-famous food hall in the heart of New York City's Meatpacking District. Commonly featured in walking and food tours, the market has an array of dining options that draw both locals and travelers. Set aside a couple of hours to conquer the corridors of this sprawling indoor marketplace. Many travelers load up on fresh produce, prime cuts of meat, artisanal cheeses, and even imported Italian dry goods. For more elbow room, visit either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Plus, keep a lookout for delicious free samples and the quaint bookstore on site. – Tripadvisor

Neighbourhood: Chelsea
Home to hundreds of art galleries, beautiful brownstones, and one of New York’s newest and most popular attractions, Chelsea is one of the city’s jewels when it comes to neighbourhood life. The contemporary art scene is an integral part of the neighbourhood’s identity, with gallery openings almost every night of the week and countless exhibits to explore. As a longtime hub of gay culture in New York City, it’s also a diverse district with a vibrant nightlife scene. The opening of the High Line, an abandoned elevated train track transformed into a world-class pedestrian park, gave this neighbourhood new life as a tourist destination. The High Line provides visitors with a tranquil, elevated space with incomparable views, providing an unparalleled way to experience the city.

- Dimitris LSydney, Australia50,924 contributionsExciting Chelsea MarketChelsea Market is an exciting place to go. We visited and spent several hours just walking and looking around and having fun! There many shops of all descriptions, from meat shops, to grocery shops, fresh produce, and the all important "tourist" type of shops! And of course there are food shops, restaurants and bars! We walked the High Line and at the end of it walked straight into Chelsea Market. Not to be missed on any visit to the city!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- aavct90283 contributionsNever Gets OldI love this market - there are a million food options. Asian, tahini soft serve, sweet like fudge, italian, burgers...I could keep going. Everything is high quality and I think the prices are quite reasonable given the location. They also have some fun clothing and grocery shopping if you want to bring something home. I think this is a must do if vacationing in NYC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- deanwebb2016Brisbane, Australia332 contributionsOyster shootersNice historic building, worth a visit by tourists, as an add on to taking a walk along the High Line. Good option for Brekky or lunch. Easily accessible via the subway and a very short walk to the High Line. The oyster bar had a good selection of seafood, and we went the oyster shooters. Very good, particularly the Tequila based one. A nice pick me up before the long walk ahead.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- Adventure DivaManchester, Connecticut2,781 contributionsWhere the Oreo cookie was invented and producedThis former Nabisco factory complex invented and produced the famed Oreo cookie . The old building was gutted out in the 90s and transformed into a market that is alive and well. It can get crowded quickly so try to go on the off hours when they open in the morning or after lunch.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 November 2023
- CarolynNYCNew York City, New York122 contributionsYou’ll Find Something Yummy HereDefinitely worth a stop off from the Whitney Museum or the High Line (High Line actually passes it, you can get off right there). I went around the holidays, it was a little too crowded and not enough places to sit if you did want to get something to eat, but….lots of yummy looking food choices, and plenty of people had found a perch somewhere to enjoy a quick meal. I filled a basket with utterly unnecessary German Xmas goodies (I’m a sucker for soft gingerbread) at one market, then made my way through the crowd to stare at Curry Wurst from a crew I recognized as having THE BEST brats—I didn;t have anything, but a sweet Australian mom there said they;d just eaten from there and loved it (think: brats with onion/sourkrout, on good bread, with perfect potato salad…). I asked their little boy if he’d liked it, and he gave me a big, catsup speckled smile, as well as a jaunty thumbs up. So you know it;s good. :)Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 January 2024
- John MNew York City, New York796 contributionsRecommendedChelsea Market is a foodie mecca, not far from the Whitney Museum. The number of options here is overwhelming. One of our personal favorites is the halva/tahini spot Seed + Mill, which offers soft service ice cream with tahini and halva. The market is usually quite crowded and offers limited seating, so keep that in mind if you are deciding to bring a group here.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 January 2024

There are many shops and stalls selling a variety of items. We bought some chocolate bars from A Taste of Economy Candy which we cannot get in the UK and they were all yummy. The market is like an industrial warehouse and is very well done and great to wander around.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

It was as quite busy with people eating lunch but we found a pastry cafe and it was quiet. The tea was great and we were in our way. We did check out the maker space before proceeding. Very nice vibe.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024

We went with a friend, a NY resident who says that the place is always crowded. Getting a seat can can be an issue. Interesting and pleased that we went.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 February 2024

I was advised to visit Chelsea Market due to the variety of foods on offer. We went to check it out, it was absolutely heaving, nowhere to sit or barely stand to eat any of the food if you bought something, queues were massive. We managed to find a table in a restaurant, and ordered some chips as the menu was mostly vegetarian/vegan I believe. I don’t know if we just went during a very busy period but it was so difficult to enjoy the experience.

We were staying nearby so visited a few times.
Friday lunch was rammed so don’t recommend visiting then but over the weekend was much quieter,
Had a nice reasonably priced lunch.
Only annoying thing was I purchased a few canvas bags and a mug as presents. The sealed mug when I got home was defective. Annoying. 😒

The Chelsea Market is an indoor collection of restaurants and boutique stores. It was very crowded when we were there, and most of the restaurants were pretty tiny with no seating or small seating areas. We meandered through some interesting shops, but generally they didn't carry any different items than stores in other places. This is a popular place, so others must have a different opinion, but I would say it is only worth visiting if you're already in Chelsea.

During our stay in NY, we visited Chelsea market three times.
The market has several restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, grocery stores, tacquerias and everything else you could wish for;if I had to be under quarantine, that would be the ideal spot not to die of hunger!
We tried several foods and loved them all, prices were competitive and the atmosphere was definitely cordial and joyful.
There was though a dearth of tables or benches for people who wanted to take the food away, but we found a stone structure next to a well and enjoyed our drinks there.

Unfortunately with our visiting Little Island & walking the High Line up to Hudson Yards we just did not have the time needed to truly absorb the Chelsea Market plus we had just had a big breakfast before starting out that day. Just walking thru as a foodie I know I could have truly appreciated this place with more time and I will put it on my radar to do a food grazing the next time I am in the city. It is a huge food hall and marketplace and it does draw millions of visitors annually, not only tourists but local foodies as well. So if you can spare the time and have the empty stomach by all means do it right. Or shop to give great gifts.

We just strolled through after lunch on a Sunday to get to know the place. They did. great job of repurposing this old factory and have deliberately conserved the old-factory look. Instead of making this look like a sterile modern mall, things are a little dark and many of the old fixtures remain. Food is a big theme, but there are lots of shops selling things like chocolate, ethnic groceries, gifts, clothes, one sells just hot sauces!, etc. There were LOTS of people of all ages on a Sunday in the early afternoon, many lining up to get lunch from their favorite stands. Whether you buy anything or not, this is a very DIFFERENT shopping center experience and I would recommend you check it out!

I absolutely love wandering around in the Chelsea Market. It has a wide variety of food options - everything I've eaten here has been fantastic. There are also a lot of shops selling various non-edible items (books, handmade artwork, etc.). Everything here supports the local community, which is great. It's a busy market, so there's a lot to see and to do, and the lights and music really enrich the experience. I'd recommend walking through the market to soak everything in, and once you're hungry, choose from one of the many amazing local restaurants.

Plenty of food options and little shops dotted around the market.
Can be easily accessed from the high line just down the steps.
We visited at around 1pm and it was very busy so I would avoid going the at lunchtime if your not keen on crowds

We ate at BIG TINGS the jerk chicken bowl , macaroni cheese was beautiful as was the service. Really recommend 10/10
However we ate at the Thai place AYADA tonight and the red curry was not good, service was appalling and £100 for 2 bowls of stuff floating around in bowls, sausage appetiser (this was ok) and a chicken satay was a rip off and am really annoyed I did the British thing and left a tip. Avoid avoid avoid.

It is always a pleasure to visit Chelsea Market . The shops and the food reflect the very essence of New York City-exciting,diverse,eclectic.I was impressed by the charming seating set up along the front and the back of the market. We had Maine lobster rolls for lunch in a private outdoor booth. We had our favorite gelato for dessert inside the market. Majority of the people wore masks and were social distancing.

I have been trying to buy a Chelsea Market gift card for our son and daughter-in-law. I have tried to call the phone number on their website several times, no one answers and no one has called back. If anyone can tell me how and where to get one, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Written 15 November 2018
I doubt that you can get a gift card for "the chelsea market" itself. The chelsea market is really a building in chelsea that is made up of a number of restaurants, shops and other businesses. it is a unique array of eclectic things all in one place. You may want to narrow it down to a single vendor as one of the others suggested above! good luck!
Written 11 January 2019
Has anyone used the Chelsea Market gift cards? Can they be used at all of the vendors in the market?
