The Ethel Barrymore Theatre is the only surviving theatre of the many Lee and J.J. Shubert built for performers who were affiliated with them. Ethel Barrymore was part of the renowned Barrymore acting dynasty, and her tremendous popularity in New York and London society established her as a household name in the US and England. She had achieved stardom under the management of producer Charles Frohman beginning in 1901. In 1928, the Shuberts offered to build her a theatre and commission a play for her to premiere in her namesake house. The Barrymore is the last theatre Lee and J.J. Shubert built. Designed by Herbert Krapp, its exterior was modeled on the design of public baths in Rome, with a two-story terra-cotta grillwork screen. The interior decor combines Elizabethan, Mediterranean, and Adamsesque styles. The most elaborate interior element is the boxes, which feature a sunburst pattern over a columned portico.

The rating is for the play -- not for the venue which I really enjoyed. It was a mediocre attempt at adapting the Chekhov script to the Glasnost-Perestroika era -- some clever lines (reference to English speaking countries in which Australia featured last) and the best lines written for the male characters. It was an adaptation, wasn't it? How about... More

Went in and saw 'The Present" - great show and a great historic theater. Beautiful chandelier, and the decor is amazing. Note - bathrooms although plentiful are in the basement. Offered water and snacks ala employees with trays. Seats a little tight and little leg room. Try and reserve aisle seats.

This is a gripping story of a party, mixed with family and friends. The mixture is toxic and is a disturbing tale of friends family and lovers. Kate Blanchet is extraordinary in her role .... riveting and passionate. Do not expect to laugh much and in some parts, you will feel like you need to hold onto the chair. I... More

We loved our theatre experience at the Ethel Barrymore. How could anything be wrong when you can see Cate Blanchett, perhaps the greatest acting talent of ours or any other lifetime, perform live on Broadway! The play did not disappoint, so please don't read negative reviews (like Rex Reed who is Mr. Cranky Pants about everything and everyone except his... More

Attended the Broadway show THE PRESENT. Beautiful theatre; staff was helpful in seating people; made sure everyone had a ticket, offered the Playbill to each person; very attentive.

My husband and I thought it would be a good idea to see Cate Blanchett in the Present at the Barrymore theatre. We lined up at 8:15 to get tickets that went on sale at 10 a.m. When we made our way to the ticket window the very gruff employee stated that all the rush seats are partial view. We... More

Felt like a small London Theatre set in the bustle of the Broadway, great staff and reasonable drinks/snack. security were not great at the Mobile/cell phone checking - had to ask a group of youngsters to shut them off and shut up half way through as it was distracting. Excellent show, easy to find and felt very safe and secure

Alton Brown's performance is one of my favorite broadway experiences, no one genre can capture it. Barrymore Theater is a wonderful venue for his performance.

We got "good" tickets on the front but on the left side. H 17 & 19 and G 17 & 19. The actors faced the right side and since the show was a lot about talking we couldn't hear well enough what the actor said. Too bad!

Great show and definitely an amazing theatre. The theatre was very old-fashioned but was equipped with a great sound system, interactive stage, and friendly staff.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
