Old City Hall is located right next to Independence Hall at the corner of Chestnut and 5th. You can go right in compared to Independence Hall where you have to pass through security and metal detectors. Old City Hall housed the first supreme court of the United States. After the US constitution was signed in 1787, Philadelphia was the capital... More

Rather than try to write great detail better available on website, I will just make a few personal comments. A true monument to its opulent decorative tradition. The opposite of a modern skyscraper. It was the tallest building in the world when built. Still the largest all masonry (no frame) buildings in the world. Tallest statue on top of a... More

Fascinating, amazing building. We walked through and around it at least once a day. There are 250 sculptures within and without. Spend some time and don't miss one detail. Took the Tower Tour to get a close-up view of the Penn statue and to see the city from on high. Only 5 minutes allowed once at the observation deck. Observation... More

Find the cornerstone to the building and take from there... Every main square in the US will have City Hall and nearby... a Masonic Temple. Compare that by way of contrast to the Spaniard tradition of having City Hall and the Catholic Cathedral instead. Anyhow the hallways inside are HUGE, just pop your head inside any of the Court Rooms... More

If you're planning a trip to Philadelphia, you simply must take some time to walk through the older part of City Hall. The history and architecture is wonderful and a bit of a break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Philadelphia.

We visited on a very hot day, some parts of the tour are outside or not air conditioned so be prepared. There is only one public tour at noon and the cost was reasonable. The building and sculptures are great. The ride to the base of William Penn and the views are great.

All of the details are breath-taking and stunning. If you are in for the DNC, explore the court yard area, which has a beautiful painting of astrological signs and a compass. There is also shaded seating, so you can bring your lunch from the Reading Terminal or from one of the couple cafes in the area and enjoy the sunshine.

If history is or thing OR not the Hall is a great stop. The ranger we had was over the top with background and history (most of which was accurate). A great stop for all Americans.

The newer one is also old, and huge, and some blocks away. This is even older, and is where our Supreme Court once met, for about nine years, long ago. You can walk in and see that chamber for free and it's worth a look. Guides there can tell you more about it.
