Very lovely, but the trail was mushy. Must be great in the summer. Only went in about a mile, but it was well marked.

October 12, 2016 - First, take Exit 85 of Route 40 to the Northwest New Mexico visitors center. Review the exhibits, talk with a ranger and get a map of the Monument to determine where you would like to drive and hike. After we left the visitors center, we got back onto Route 40 and drove to exit 89, where... More

This park was bigger than we expected. There are extensive trails available but you do need to drive about 40 miles to get close to the main attractions. Once there, the scenery is spectacular. Make sure to walk out to the arch.

We stopped at the parks visitors center and saw an excellent film on the park that gave the history of the area. We enjoyed Sandstone Bluff and the Arch. We were the only people at these sites.

A friend told me about this place. He said he and his wife were driving thru the 'middle of no where' NM and she needed a rest room, so they followed the signs to El Malpais. They ended up spending 6 hours there. So we listened to his advice and stopped on our way thru. We had a lovely lunch... More

You need to take the time to go drive through this area. There is hiking and beautiful views! If you don't have four wheel drive I would suggest staying on or close to the blacktop as the dirt roads can be very rough and like a washboard. Awesome place though!!!

El Malpais (El Mal pie ace) is located just South of Grants. I live in NM and really never hear about this place, which is strange because it's really unique and spectacular. Well worth a visit.

Our family visited El Malpais on a recent Monday as the first stop on a day trip from Santa Fe to Chinle, AZ. We were hoping to make a quick stop and see several of the sights but the layout of the park made that very difficult. The visitor center is located right off exit 85 of interstate 40 and... More

Enjoyed our drive through this National Monument. I didn't even know this existed, but the road we took to go back into Az. took us right though this area. What an awesome surprise! We didn't stop, but the views were awesome from the road.
