Really enjoyed the National Monument. The material available was informative and the scenery beautiful with the lava areas most interesting. Great place to hike and soak up the area.

This is perhaps one of the more beautiful areas in New Mexico, despite the area being named Malpais (Spanish for badlands). Great hiking and breathtaking vistas.

I only stopped briefly in the National Monument, visiting the Sandstone Bluffs in the late afternoon and then La Ventana Arch the following morning. The Bluffs featured a beautiful view, though the wind when I visited was brutal. The lighting at the arch in the...More

Many paths to walk to see a variety of things from lava flows to caves. If you are there in the evening enjoy the night sky or at times the sounds of bats. Check it out.

Really enjoyed all the hikes in this National Monument - nice moderate climbs with lots of interesting scenery. We climbed up right under Ventana Arch to get some really great photos.

I drove through El Malpais looking for something worth photographing, but there wasn't much there and few places along the road to stop the car safely.

This park is quite large and intertwines with El Malpais National Conservation Area quite a bit, so I recommend stopping at one of the Ranger Stations/Visitor Centers to get recommendations to plan which areas you'd like to see. The scenery is beautiful with all the...More

We weren't planning to spend time here, but we stopped by the visitor center off I40 and, based on info from friendly and helpful ranger, decided to return later to do a short sunset drive and walk once it started to cool off a little....More

Short hike to see the arch was well worth it. The setting is gorgeous. Was definitely worth the drive out to the area.

It's not a clear cut answer from visiting the website(s) and you should probably call. El Malpais is divided between NPS and BLM so there may be different rules in the two areas.

I agree with JerryH990. 3 hours should be enough to tour the monument. As Jerry said, the Lava hike is very interesting, but the footing is very uneven and you need to be careful to follow the trail markers. Good hiking... More

The Park area is very slightly south and very slightly east of Grants, NM. The turnoff is easy to miss if you are traveling I-40 and zipping along at the speed limit. Especially if many trucks are on the road. What I... More
