Visited Fort Washington Park one summer afternoon and had the place mostly to ourselves. The ranger gave us a tour of the site, and we learned about the history of Fort Washington. The site has had a long history, dating back to the War of 1812, and multiple incarnations of defensive fortifications here along the Potomac. Pretty interesting.

Great place to explore with kids. Lots of nooks and cool places that kids will want to run, climb, and jump on. We went when the weather was cold and still had a great time.

Fun park with lots of open space. We rented a picnic area for my mothers birthday and invited about 50 family members. No pavilion is offered but our space had plenty of parking and open space for the kids. We all enjoyed the fort and running down to the water. I wish they would spend a bit more on upgrades... More

Fort Washington Park is a unit of the National Park Service. Although located in Maryland which is the Mid-Atlantic Region in the National Park Service divisions, it is part of the National Capital Region parks. The fort was built to defend the nation’s capital in Washington, DC after the British attacked and burned much of the capital city during the... More

This is a really nice park, with awesome views. The actual fort is amazing. One downside is that there really isn't a lot of interpretive signage around the park and the visitor's center is very small. Thus, I felt that I could have learned a lot more.

Located along the Potomac River nearly across from Mt. Vernon, the site of Fort Washington has a long history as a military base. The fortifications constructed here, however, did not take into account iron clad warships and soon proved out-of-date. The scenic beauty of the location is outstanding and the dry moats and remnants of the fort are fascinating.

We took a little trip to Ft. Washington Park and was pleasantly surprised to learn about the history of the Park and the area of Ft. Washington. There's still so much to see!! The Park is huge and we still haven't seen it all!! If you're in the area make a point to visit this Park!!

I am a writer and photographer for National Park Planner (npplan.com) and I visited Fort Washington Park in May 2016. The park is located in Fort Washington, Maryland, just south of Alexandria on the Potomac River. It preserves the site of a brick fort that was constructed between 1814 and 1824, plus a number of concrete artillery batteries built in... More
