Join the Binkley family for a trip through Alaska's gold mining history at Gold Dredge 8. Enjoy a close up view of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and a presentation about it's construction and operation. Then take a seat aboard a replica of the narrow-gauge Tanana Valley Railroad and hear the conductor tell tales of prospectors who arrived by the thousands during the gold rush. The train ride takes you to Gold Dredge 8 where you will see first-hand how the dredge worked the gold fields, then receive a brief but informative course on gold panning. Once the train arrives at the camp, you will try panning for yourself! You will find gold- we guarantee it! Finally, explore the dredge camp and enjoy complimentary coffee and freshly baked cookies in the gift shop as your gold is weighed, then hop aboard the train and return to the station.

We were greeted by Tim at the main entrance. He is very informative and knowledgable plus easy to listen to. He had great information about the area. We hopped on the open air train and were entertained by Earl with his guitar and fun songs. They stop along the way and explain how the mining was done years ago. Your... More

My hubby and myself and our two friends really enjoyed this tour. We saw part of the Alaskan Pipeline and heard a narrator talk about the facts and history of the pipeline and then we boarded a little train that took us to the site where we would get to pan for gold. On the way, our very excellent narrator... More

Had a great time. The staff was very friendly and knowledge. Free homemade cookies and hot chocolate were great. Panning for gold was fun. The dredge was interesting to tour. Lots of interesting artifacts in the store. Well worth the trip.

Great insight into the history of Alaskan Gold Rush. Panning for gold was easier than expected and everyone goes home with some gold. Learning how mining technogy changed overtime was interesting. Also time spent learning from an expert about the Alaskan Pipeline was a bonus.

Just finished doing the dredge. I understand it is the beginning of the season but the need to work on crowd flow and control. That is only a minor thing in this very fun and informative Adventure. If you are in Fairbanks for a day take this side trip or excursion if your cruise has this on list. The young... More

Step back to the gold rush days and enjoy panning for gold. You take a train to the dredge and hear commentary along the way. At the dredge you pan for gold, have a gifyshp, free cookies and coffee or hot chocolate. Lots of fun.

We did the Gold Dredge 8 while in Alaska and it was awesome and fun! We learned so much about the history and were able to actually pan for gold. This is a must do if you are in Fairbanks.

I am always finding new things to comment on on Trip Advisor so bit of a delay here! . As part of our first Alaska holiday from the United Kingdom a few years ago we went on this trip and although we can be wary of organised trips when on holiday my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The... More
