I love Fairbanks and have been there twice. There's so much to do, see, and learn. I visited once in the summer and once in the winter and both trips were wonderful.

I stayed downtown on 1st Street, at the Springhill Suites. Loved the area where we stayed -- charming and convenient. Lots of little shops and restaurants, some of which were really good (e.g., Lavelle's Bistro). There's a really nice walk along the river too.

There were many little shops and restaurants one could easily get to by walking. Everyone we met was very friendly and happy to talk about things to do and places to visit.

Our visit to Fairbanks reminded me of growing up in the 30's and 40's when all towns were small and "highrise" was an unknown word. And beautiful flowers all over the city in front of buildings. stores, homes - maybe the 20+ hours of sunshine...More

I received a historical walking tour guide from the Morris Thompson center, helpful to navigate the downtown area. Despite the snow and difficult walking conditions it was easy to find my way around. I enjoyed the shops which were close to my hotel... Springhill Marriot....More

I came across a site that described a number of points in the downtown area that have historical significance. We took our own tour to see such places, and it was delightful. Fun to read about the history of Fairbanks.

There are some interesting places to visit Downtown Fairbanks and the walk along the river is nice. Some cute shops and boutiques in the Co-op building. There is a cultural center and the children's museum is nice. Most of old Fairbanks has been removed due...More

We walked from our hotel to the downtown area. The sidewalks were lined with flowers, just a beautiful sight. Gift shops were open and we strolled in and out of many. Sidewalks were level. Street crossing were properly marked. Good illumination and ADA accessible.

There is very little to do in downtown Fairbanks! It seems mostly abandoned and not much to see. Not worth any time other than the cultural center and peace plaza.

I think it would be to far to walk, unless your hikers and up for an adventure.

I did not see any free shuttles. Taxi's were reasonable. Its not a big area. Maybe walk one way and taxi the other.
