The home where the Trumans spent most of their lives is like a snapshot of history. The family made very few changes to this house over time and following Bess's death was immediately turned over to the Park Service which has preserved it. Many of the rooms look like they expect Bess or Harry to walk in any minute. The... More

As a social studies major, I enjoy history wherever I find it! A beautiful, stately home in a very pleasant neighborhood, truly a piece of Americana...It's no wonder Truman disliked being away from his home when in Washington. The character of Independence MO helps to explain the traditional character qualities Truman had developed, including his sometimes brutal directness and honesty.

Visiting this presidential home is a far cry from any palatial dwellings or plantations of other presidents. Harry and Bess were down-home folks and proud of it. The house is just as it was the day Bess died. This is a don't miss tour.

The home of Harry and Bess Truman is just like they left it. It's good to see the humble beginnings of a man who rose to President.

You can still view the outside but the interior is permanently closed. We explored a little with the cell phone tour but were disappointed we could not go in the home.

There's a short video at the site headquarters and that is definitely worth seeing. They also have a book of photos of the 2nd floor of the house, which is not open to the public. We chose not to take a tour of the house, but we did walk around the area and down a few blocks to view the... More

Step back in time as the house is set the same way it was when Harry and Bess Truman occupied the house. You must get tickets to tour the house and the visitor center, and there is a short film there as well. When you tour the home, there are no photos allowed, but you will have more than enough... The visitor center is right on the main square in Independence. We got there about a half hour before closing but were able to see a good short intro film. Then drove to see his house - from the outside only. Still we got the sense and understanding, from seeing his town and house, of the values instilled in this... More

I visited the Harry S Truman National Historic Site to learn more about the life of the 33rd President of the United States. My family also enjoys seeing any unit of our national park service. My first stop was the visitors center which is in Historic Fire Station No. 1 and is about 5 blocks from the Truman home. It... More
