We ended up hiking a good wee circuit of these waterfalls & it also helped having MAPS.ME as it highlighted the various paths. We started the walk taking the path up by Puri Lumbung Cottages. We soon realised we didn't need to do this as the path swings back to the road. Better to start at Manah Liang Bungalow. The path eventually swings back to the road again at Adila Warung Homestay. Then it follows a stream through the jungle till you come out at a junction. We took a left down by a hut selling various spices & then a right till we eventually came to Red Coral (also known as Munduk & Air Terjun Tanah Barak.) We backtracked to the hut & followed the sign for Melanting Waterfall on a scenic path. Places to eat & drink here including Warung Sareswati. At the junction we headed left passing Melanting Cottages (& barking dogs) before paying our 10,000 each. We then descended the many slippy steps before we came to Laangan Melanting Waterfall. You could feel the power of this waterfall from it's spray. At the bottom we got soaked then took a right passed the other ticket office. Crossed the bamboo bridge & followed the trail till the first intersection & we swung left. At another junction we swung right & then right again up the concrete steps, to dogs barking & eventually ending up coming out to the main road at Taman Ayu Homestay.
2 days later we went for another walk & repeated the first section up until near Red Coral & then we swung right uphill to the signs for the Eco Cafe & left for a km or 2 until Golden Valley Waterfall (Air Terjun Empelan)

Melanting waterfall is the lusher, wider, bigger and stronger cousin of the more-visited Munduk waterfall. It is more captivating and set in a more verdant surrounds as it is deeper in the forest. Standing 30 metres from the waterfall, I got soaked and cold from the strong wind created by the fall.
This waterfall is accessible from the same carpark via which most visitors access Munduk waterfall. After a 10-minute hike from the carpark, you will reach the toll booth for Munduk waterfall ("the first waterfall"; another 10 minutes away). Here, just ask the attendant for directions to Melanting waterfall ("the second waterfall"), which is about a 45-minute-hike away in the opposite direction from Munduk waterfall.
Melanting waterfall also has a toll booth (both toll charges are small), after which it is a steep climb down to the base of the fall. If you aren't relatively fit, the climb back up could be arduous.
Many people not living in Munduk village (including our driver from Denpasar) don't seem to be aware of Melanting waterfall, and the signage for it is poor, but it most asssuredly exists. We also saw at least one other way to it from an adjacent village.
We capped the trek by enjoying Kopi Luwak from free-range civet cats at Eco Cafe (1), which was another 45-minute hike once we returned to the first toll booth. As we didn't want to backtrack to the first carpark, we got our driver to pick us up from the part of Munduk main road that required a shorter trek from Eco Cafe.

I loved my stay in Munduk, a sleepy little town with lots to offer!
The Waterfalls are a short hike from the centre of Munduk and can be found by following the footpaths and keeping your ears open for the sound of the falls. Signage is nonexistent however, probably to encourage you to get a local guide. My parter and I had no real issues in finding it ourselves though.
An admission fee of 10,000 per person was taken at the top of the stairs down to the falls which seems fair as the steps cannot have been easy or quick to make.
The falls themselves are large and impressive it's a great place to cool off after your walk.

The first waterfall is spectacular and pretty easy to get to. I started from Munduk Sari villa and there is a nice track away from the road that gets you there quite quickly. My tip is to wear good shoes. Some people tried to do it in thongs and I don't know how they managed it. The second waterfall is down a lot of steps. I mean a real LOT of steps so if you have knee trouble don't bother. I saw some people going back up the stairs to retrace their steps and my hat goes off to them. There's no way I could face going up them. I continued on through the jungle which was a lot more interesting. The last time I did this walk I was worried I wold get lost as there are no markings and you are a long way down from the road so can't use the noise as a guide. I couldn't believe how many warungs have sprung up since then. There is no chance of getting lost anymore. It's still a big climb up but manageable (and I'm not very fit).

I was more impressed with the walk into the falls than with the falls themselves. The tropical vegetation and botanical signs make this a memorable journey through the Balinese forest. You will see coffee beans, dragon fruit and most of the exotic fruits that are served in Bali. In addition check out the prehistoric looking gigantic fern trees and all of the stunning butterflies. I have seen more impressive waterfalls elsewhere. It is the hike that makes this worthwhile.

There are in fact 3 waterfalls within the vicinity, so that you can choose how much of a hike you want to go for. Visiting all 3 and doing a full circuit will take around 3 hours. There's no need for a guide, most guesthouses will provide a map, but you'll still need to ask for directions along the way if you're like me and prone to getting lost.
Start from the path at the eastern end of Munduk village, and follow the signs eastwards for the first waterfall. Then go back on yourself to get to the second waterfall. The third is somewhat more of a trek. Take a left turn at Warung Junction and head down the mountain. There are a of steps and it's pretty steep, but stunning. Cross the river at the bottom and head right and up the hill and you'll end up back in the village. Depending on the weather you might end up doing some of the walk in the clouds, but this merely adds to the atmosphere. It's really a beautiful part of the world.

We visited this waterfall in June'18 on a sunny day. We went to Red Coral and Golden Valley and walked towards Melating waterfall. It is more than one hour from the other waterfall. The road is okay till you reach the entry fee point and pay 10000 per person. Then the road is very steep and the steps are a bit difficult to negotiate. Reaching waterfall requires patience and hardship. Not many people we find on our way. We did not find the waterfall to be a great view compared to other waterfalls we had seen in Bali. On a sunny day, it is fine to take the pain but if it rains, you can expect slippery path. You may have to take the same road to come back to the place of parking (known as Munduk parking) or cross waterfall and climb up towards Munduk village (this is quite away from Munduk parking and Munduk town). We were advised to walk towards Munduk village after crossing the bamboo bridge over the river near the waterfall. That is the most difficult part of climbing up without any sign of road or direction. We did not have a guide and we just followed our instinct to walk up to Munduk village. We did not meet a single tourist or local guide or any human being on our way to Munduk village from the waterfall. It took almost 1.5 hours climb through forest (but no proper road or path) to reach Munduk village and were completely exhausted. We sought help from the local village boys who agreed to drive us using their motor bikes. Otherwise, you will take another 45 minutes to 1 hour to climb up steep road to reach the main road. It is definitely not a short hike from Munduk town. Please carry enough water and dry fruits if you have to visit this waterfall.

Some people are saying it is a difficult long walk with lots of steps. From what I've read, I expect it depends on where you start and finish. Do you remember where you started and/or finished?
Thanks

We have started our walk at Munduk Waterfall Parking (Jl. Kayu Putih - Munduk, Munduk, Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81152, Indonesia). From this starting point, the walk is easy and short.

Bonjour

I'm trying to determine the feasibility of doing a tour at this waterfall with my son (will be 2.5 when we travel). He walks fine though (of course) is kind of slow going up and down steps. I don't mind carrying him for a bit if necessary and could split between myself and my husband for a break. But how long is the walk? Are there sufficient steps? Are they slippery? Are there hand rails?
Would you suggest going here with a 2 year old? If not, are there any other waterfalls that you'd suggest? Any other tips or suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thank you!

I dont think that I would try this with a young child. We are fit 50yr olds and we found some sections of the path slippery and although the path to the first waterfall from town is paved in sections there are some areas that are not so easy. There are some steps but they are not necessarily in good condition due to the constant use and weather conditions. We walked at a constant but gentle pace and it took us maybe 45mins to go down, but of course you then need to go back up to the village which of course is harder. There are, so I am told, 300 steps up to the top of the waterfall and to continue on walking the trail. We did not do this but turned around and went back from the bottom. We did not see any young children but maybe 8 years or older. Unless your child is used to walking long distances I would not recomend. Good luck with your decision.

Hi, bisky63_13. What would you like to know about this attraction? How long and how steep was the walk?
Written 4 March 2017
as far as I can remember the walk took about 50 MN to 1 hour in total. walking slowly and taking time to take pictures. On tthe way back it could be difficult if you are not in good physical condition because you have about 200 steps and you could consider it steep ....
anyway this is a beautifull walk... there are 3 water falls in munduk and you can not go to melanting in 5 or 10 mn from the road starting from munduk
