Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

- bre126Naas, Ireland118 contributionsJackson squareReally picturesque square .... central park with pathways, benches to rest and Jackson statue. Cathedral overlook Square as well as museum on either side of cathedral .... Presbytere and Cabildo. 2 sides of square shops and restaurants with fabulous wrought iron (or maybe cast iron- wasn't sure of difference) balconies. 4th side opened onto Mississipi. Entertainment around square all the time. At night voodoo card readers. And I believe park fills with cats after it's locked. A mustVisited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 March 2023

It faces the Mississippi River, has a mini grass park with monument in front, and street performers/artist close to its entrance. Its a great photo Op, but also a pulse visit to get into the New Orleans vibe/culture.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2023

The Park closed, and no one could open the gates. My flight was leaving the next day in the morning. The Park Attend, Leon, and the customer service operator retrieve my phone. I have my phone; what extraordinary care for a visitor. I am still in awe of how Leon had the phone and the operator was able to connect with him. , we still have people with integrity. I love New Orleans!Visited April 2023Written 3 May 2023

In the middle the Andrew Jackson statue and the St, Louis Cathedral, rebuilt in 1788 after the big fire . Sit down and relax . Not only the square itself, but the surrounding places, the St Louis Cathedral, Cafe du Monde, the artists displays, the French Market, but also radiating outward, Preservation Hall, Bourbon Street, the Mississippi River, and the myriad restaurants, bars with music and street performers. It was all walkable and every block filled with music and rhythm. The other focal point of our visit was the Garden District.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 May 2023
- kirkgirlIreland409 contributionsGood starting point for visit to NOLAThis was the starting point of our first morning walking tour, and it is a good spot as you get the history behind the statue, and it breaks up the space between the French Quarter and the Mississipi. We found this to be an ideal spot during the week to sit and have our picnic out of Rouses Market, away from the hustle and bustle of Royal and Bourbon. A little bit of an oasis in the city.Visited May 2023Written 15 June 2023

This park is great for a stroll and to get that photo opportunity. There are plenty of restaurants around it and the St. Louis Cathedral at one end which is definitely worth a visit as well.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2023

- Robert BozeChula Vista, California31 contributionsA great place to launch you day in the French QuarterJackson square is very picturesque and surrounded by artists displaying their works. After pictures of the square. Café du Monde is right across the street so you can grab some wonderful New Orleans coffee and powdered sugar covered beignets before taking a carriage ride around the French Quarter. After returning from your ride, there are several really good restaurants and book shops where you can eat and then find some wonderful books on the history of New Orleans. Oh, and try to be there at noon when the cathedrals bells go off! They're unusual and well worth waiting for.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 September 2023

Amazing artwork for sale here, especially on the weekends. Very affordable and fun to interact with the artists themselves. Not to mention the gorgeous trees!

The early morning crowd can be a bit shady around the square. After the vendors and bands come out it was a lively and much more inviting space.

Beautiful! We enjoyed this area. Close to the water, it was decorated for Christmas, music, food, art, souvenirs, beautiful buildings - everything. We took a stroll in the rain and it was worth it.

Well kept small park in the middle of the busy city with the Cathedral sitting to one side of it. At the weekend it was surrounded by artists selling their work among the resident 'homeless' .

There is so much to do in Jackson Square and so much history to absorb.
Time your visit when St. Louis Cathedral is open for the full experience. It's a lovely church filled with wonderful artifacts.
Stroll the area and see local artists at work and lots of wonderful restaurants ... again ... during the day.
At night ... the area becomes sketchy and one really need to be street smart to be walking through. Lots of great photo opportunities in Jackson Square, so don't miss out on it.

There are plenty of parking lots. If you do a bing map search for lots close to your location or you can park further out and take the trolley cars in.

For young people, the difference in tastes between 13 years and 17 years is large so it is difficult to give you a definite recommendation. There are many activities in the Square itself, from jugglers, palm readers, musicians, that could suit the many tastes for the wide You could visit the cathedral and the Cabildo or good get a beignet in the Café du Monde (but the long lines may deter you). You could walk along to the French Market and the Jazz museum and stop by the many stalls on the way (about half a day).
A 3 hour tour of New Orleans could give you an overview of the the history and then you can continue the visit yourself . You could also take the Saint Charles streetcar to Uptown and eat in one of the districts restaurants.

How much are the horse and carriage rides?
BretH_13

It’s $20 per person for a shared ride, but $100 for a private carriage for 30 minutes. We had a group of 4 so went ahead with the private ride, and were extremely happy we did. Highly recommended!
