Popular writer Anne Rice has not lived in this Garden District home for some time now, but because it is the setting for many of her most popular Mayfair Witch books, the private residence draws many fans and onlookers. (Anne Rice lived here from 1989 to 2004.) The home is located at 1239 First Street (First and Chestnut) and is... More

The house is right on first street, an easy walk from the St. Charles streetcars. It's lovely, like many others in the area, and sits across the street from the Carroll house where a dog plays fetch with all the passerbys. The garden district and this house are enchanting and worth a quiet southern stroll as part of your NoLa... More

This house is now known as the Brevard-Rice House, as noted on the plaque in front of the house. If you are doing a self-guided walking tour of the Garden District, make sure to swing by this home, especially if you are a fan of Anne Rice. You will only be able to view the house from the street. It's... More

Staying in Garden District

Neighbourhood Profile
Garden District
Head to the Garden District for the full-on New Orleans experience replete with quaintly clanking streetcars, proudly grandiose antebellum mansions, picture perfect avenues lined with live oaks loaded down with Spanish moss, and a wealth of beautiful churches and many more architectural marvels. Even a brief excursion here makes plain why it’s called the Garden District. So, when you visit be sure to give yourself ample time for admiration at a languidly slow pace befitting such gentile strand of riverside living and to allow you to maximize each opportunity to stop and smell the roses – and whichever other blooms you might come across. While taking it all in, you’d do well to dine at one of the city’s most beloved destinations for regional cuisine. Gourmands from far and wide (and right round the corner) swear the age-old Commander’s Palace is the best restaurant in town – and have been doing so since it opened back in 1880.
