I wanted to see Metairie Cemetery during our visit to New Orleans. It has the largest collection of marble tombs in New Orleans, and they're above ground. One can only dream of catching a jazz funeral in progress ... it wasn't in the cards. There weren't many historic information markers in the cemetery, so I read about it after our... More

My boyfriend and I stopped here for an hour on our last trip to New Orleans (February 2016) and it was incredibly fascinating. We were not on a tour: we just came with local friends, so there was no fee to park and enter the grounds, nor were there any visitor amenities you might get with a tour (brochures, bathrooms,... Some of the mausoleums are the size of houses! The Grieving Angel is here, she is absolutely stunning. I am forever changed for viewing that gorgeous sculpture. The roads to the cemetery are just a huge jumble. Please be careful and considerate when you are driving to the entrance! Beautiful, serene place!

Stop in the office and get a tour CD. Lots to explore and many historical facts. Loved seeing the architecture of mausoleums and their stained glass.

We stopped by this Cemetery quite by accident on a grey and rainy day as we were just driving around New Orleans. It was interesting to see unique burial spots. We even took a few pictures of some of the more unique and/or lovely tombs. Wouldn't want to go there alone, however. Unique place to visit, however, if you happen... More

We arrived at Metairie Cemetery thinking it was similar to visiting the Arlington National Cemetery - one could sign up for a tour when you arrive. Nope so much. There isn't a tour desk on sight, so we are presuming you have to go through a third-party to have a tour, and since we did not have a tour guide,... More

Very nice cemetery. Great for people who can't do a lot of walking because you can drive all through this cemetery.

I had never heard of Metairie Cemetery before I arrived, I came upon it by complete coincidence. Like many people visiting New Orleans I had intended to visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 as I was passing through on a road trip to Dallas, TX but by the time I arrived St. Louis was already closed for the day. I... More

Wonderful tour guide. Did not rush the tour, well informed and answered all questions. Good walking tour from the French Quarter.

What an incredible place. Who would have thought that a cemetery could be so interesting. I have never been to a cemetery that could hold my interest for more an a few minutes - I have never been to one where different religious denominations are represented.

Staying in Lakeview

Neighbourhood Profile
Lakeview
Lakeview extends inland from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with much of the area reserved for family-friendly City Park. Home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, and the city’s own lush Botanical Gardens, City Park is a New Orleans gem and the perfect spot for outdoor fun with as much of a mix of culture and/or amusement as you would like. Beyond City Park more great excuses to stay outside beckon, whether on land or by boat. Developed a good deal later than most other New Orleans neighborhoods, Lakeview has a distinctively different look and feel compared to other parts of the city. Fans of mid century modern design and contemporary architecture particularly enjoy leisurely drives around the residential streets of Lake Vista, Park Island and along Lakeshore Drive.
