An easy hike and worth the time! Walking past and around to the other side of the Cathedral Spires was a highlight. We were very glad we did it. Got some beautiful pictures and were pleased to get a rubber stamp at the end of...More

We started at Sylvan Lake, went up to Harney Peak on #9, came down #4 (less people) and took detour onto Cathedral Spires #4a. Big day of hiking but worth it. Challenging but certainly not undo-able for this 50+ average hiker.

Driving the Needles hwy to get to this trail is half the experience! Amazing! Trail was rated strenuous however my 2 kids and my mother did it and it was enjoyable. Beautiful views of the mountains and "needles" shooting up to the sky! Some steep...More

If you are traveling in Black Hills National Park or going to see Mount Rushmore don't miss the chance to see the Cathedral Spires. They are incredible. Take the Needles highway (be prepared for some very slim tunnels -- one car only, thinnest is just...More

Great hike just off the Needles highway. Trail walks you through spires on each side. Would classify this is a easy to moderate hike. We hiked it early in the day and on our way out the trail was getting busy. Recommend connecting with Trail...More

This is a great hike to do if you are short on time. You scramble and hike up boulders and rocks through massive spires. We did this as an out and back. The way out is all uphill. You most likely want some good knees...More

This was a great short hike while we were doing the scenic needles highway drive. Both are exceptionally beautiful. Our 7 & 9 year old kids had no difficulty on the hike and really enjoyed climbing on the big boulders along the way. Watch out...More

I didn't do the entire hike because I was alone and never feel that it's good to hike a long distance by yourself. However, the part that I did do had beautiful views every step of the way. The beginning of the trail was not...More

We have traveled to the Black Hills many times and have never heard of bears being present or warned about. There are some isolated reports of black bears wandering into the area but those have been rare. We hike... More

If you are not a strong hiker but want to see some great views, can you go part way on the Cathedral Spires trail and still see? How long does it take to do the whole trail and return (figuring a moderate/slow pace)? Thanks :}

The trail starts out without a lot of elevation change. That takes you to the base of some of the spires. From there the trail makes a short but steeper climb and then flattens out again as you head around the back of the... More
