One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!

We come from the Rockies in Canada so snow covered mountain roads are daily life, but this place is something else. If you are a car/driving/photography fan, this is a MUST do. The roads are absolutely breathtaking. The amount of effort the local people put in to up keeping this area is historic - we watched their live feed online... More

We drove the Großglockner in early May. When we started on the road, it was already a bit foggy and snowy, and we were warned to go slow and be very safe. We made a few stops because we were basically in a white out, and learned lots of fun things about the Alpine wildlife in the area. Somewhere around... More

Go up there and enjoy some breathtaking views close to austria's highest peak that will be worth the toll price. You'll also see some awesome glacier.

We did a day trip from Salzburg (used the knowledgable services of an Austrian Guide, Mr Roman Forisch - roman.forisch@yahoo.com) to Grossglockner in early May - just a few days after the road opened. We had tons of snow on both sides of the road in the higher passes (in some places over 8 ft of snow wall), and was... More

Great views everywhere you look, a bit scary to downhill when you are up and the road is narrow. Be aware that the smoke can come and go suddenly and the weather changes fast. It can be smokey on the other side of the mountain and sunny on the other. You can find also snowy and very slippery roads in... More

Take the time to go out of your way to visit this amazing road and journey. The museums along the way are definitely worth a visit, and if you've got the legs and ambition, the cycling looks great!

I recommend you visit early in the morning to avoid a lot of the mid-day tourists. I rode my motorcycle and this is my favorite pass in all of Europe. The road is clean and smooth. There were still traces of snow on the sides of the road even in late June. The price of admission is higher than some... More

We left Salzburg and drove over this road into Heillingblut. What an amazing trip. We loved every single minute of the wildflowers, the waterfalls, the farmers on their tractors, the marmots, oh and did I mention the mountains - the stars of this amazing road. If you are in Austria - you must drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
