If your about to cross from one side to the other on Big island, saddle road is a good option. Not only because it's probably the quickest way Kona-Hilo, but also because of the experince that comes with it. You'll have to drive a climb up a couple of the great volcanoes that make up the big island, and the... More

A great shortcut to/from Hilo. A 4 mile section is still under construction but this road saves a lot of time.....about two hrs total, Hilo to Kailua-Kona. Great views as well though you do miss a lot of the more scenic points of interest but if you are short of time, use it. Larry Sharpe

We took the road to Hilo from Kona during the day. Great views through the volcanos. As we drove down the windward side we descended through the clouds. We drove back during the evening and had spectacular views of the stars.

We took this way back from the Hilo side after visiting the Volcano National Park. It was much faster to get back to Kona. They are doing road construction which slowed us down. There is not a lot to see. If there are no clouds the views are better as you can See much farther.

If you have never been to the Big Island before Saddle Road opened, you cannot appreciate the time savings that the new road provides. Obey the speed limit, however, as speeding tickets are readily handed out. We took saddle to the Mauna Kea summit and again to visit Hilo. It is very nice!

They are working on the saddle road as you come into Hilo. I believe they said it would be done in August. Expect some delays (not too long, but if you are trying to get some where by a certain time allow more time). The road is pretty rough in the construction zone so put you drink down until you... Used this road to go from Kona to Hilo. Road is easy drive except for an area of construction improvements near Hilo. Even had a nice playground for kids to break up the ride. This is a road you would also use to go to Maunea kea volcano with a 14000 ft summit. Only use 4 wheel drive on the... More

We stopped at a rest area near the turnoff for the mountain and the police were stopping people (tourists really) for 'speeding'. One elderly couple got a ticket for parking briefly in handicapped parking to drop off his wife nearer to the bathroom. He was there for under a minute and all the handicapped spaces were empty! Nice to feel... More

This is a great mountain pass road. Be aware of poor driving conditions at night. Road is often in VOG. Learn to shift your rental car as you will need to up and down shift on steep grades. Mahalo and Safe Travels

I am sure it will be so easy to drive across Hawaii when the improvements are finished, but right now it is pretty unpleasant. Lots of potholes, stop and waits and dust. A longer way is better.
