Great scenery and vistas from volcano to ocean along with the opportunity to experience a change in climate and topography. From 86 degrees along the shore down to 58 degrees over the pass.

The Saddle Road is definitely the easiest way between Kona and Hilo. the round-the-ends roads are more interesting, but for safety and quick, it can't be beaten.

Easy drive over paved roads. You will experience temperature changes along the route. Access to some state parks and observatory. There are rest stops along the way.

It was a great relief when the Saddle Road was paved and finally open to the public. This is a speedy connection between Hilo and Kona (and vice-versa), traveling between two great mountains. The scenery is out-of-this-world as you climb between fields of cinder cones....More

Its a highway, not super exciting. Follow all speed limits as the highway is new and the police are everywhere ticketing people!!!

Stayed on the Hilo side of the island part of the time, we used this road as the most direct and fast route to the Kona airport. Road is in great condition.

This review is based on a night drive along Saddle Road going from east to west. In short it’s a road, and because I drove it at night I cannot comment on the scenery. However for those worried about driving in the dark I can...More

Drove the Saddle Road multiple times on our trip on the Big Island. Easy smooth ride across the island. There is a rest stop about halfway across.

There are no cliffs and nothing that requires a guardrail. Most of the road is very straight and very wide (mostly 2 lane, with occasional passing lanes). There is a short section (4 miles?) on the downhill run into Hilo... More
