Right north of the Kona airport, this state park offers a couple of beach locations for swimming, sun bathing or snorkeling. You can access the park with a 2WD car....but we also go off into the lava fields to other beach locations using a 4WD...More

Visited here with my wife in the morning and the entire lot was empty. There is a rocky beach just south of here where the parking is. It is fun to watch the waves there. You might have this beach to yourself if you come...More

On a clear day like we had this beach is like a postcard painting come to life. Uncrowded and lovely white sand with clear turquoise water and it doesn't take a twenty minute hike like Makala'wena over an absolutely awful lava trail. The only bad...More

There are two parts for this beach, located in the Kekaha Kai state park (highway 19, between miles marker 90-91). The first one just at the parking, with facilities and picnic tables but not possible to swim (rocky shore) and the second one, 5 minutes...More

You have to hike or go off roading to get to this beautiful beach. The off roading was easy. Pretty bumpy but nothing crazy. I highly suggest 4 wheel drive to do this. You drive through beautiful lava rock. Once you get to the bottom...More

My friend and I spent the day here swimming and snorkeling. It is beautiful with white sand and very few rocks in the water. If you go to the sides of the beach it is nice snorkeling. Go early, it gets crowded.

Beautiful sandy beach of white sand and gentle surf. Sea turtles on the beach and swimming in the cove. We were there at dusk.

If you are looking to get away from the crowds of people this is it. Once you leave the main road it is a very rough drive through a lava rock field. You don't need 4 wheel drive but a SUV or something with high...More

We went when it was windy in Waikoloa bc it is sheltered by trees. Waves can still get pretty big. The road in is super 4x4 and the parking can be quite busy. We really liked this beach though!

No a taxi would not go here. My suggestion would be to visit Hapuna Beach Park. It is further away from Kona but a great beach day and doesn't require a walk.
