A modest cave showing how water has created cavities in the mainly chalk stone. Good guidance though only in French language (writen explanation in English).

You can do it on your way back to Avignon. Their guided tour is 45 minutes long and is offered only in French. We had to read the English manual. However, it was still a cool experience seeing the stalactites. We saw a drop of water fell from the stalactite and according to the guide, it took the water about 100 years to travel from the surface to the inside, then another 10-20 minutes to drop down from the tip of the stalactite! The interior took about one million years to form. The best surprise was a peacock named Leon who greeted us at the gate when we came out. He displayed his full tail for 15 minutes and only closed it when everyone left - what a ham!…

We visited the caves last week and were highly impressed. It is a flat walk with few steps and quite a significant number of interesting rock formations. The guide spoke in French but you could read her brief beforehand on the history of the cave and the description of what we were seeing. Worth the visit if you are in the area and it makes a nice change from wineries on a hot day. …

Grottes de Thouzon is a natural beauty. An educational geological experience created millions of years ago, and one which I would highly recommend if you are in Southern France. The caves are a great activity to do on a warm afternoon, as the temperature in the caves only reach around 13 degrees Celsius.…
