This was our first visit to Lassen Park in more than two decades, and I've forgotten how beautiful this place is. This time we camped in the northeast corner of the park, near Cinder Cone. We were here over the Fourth of July weekend, together with hundreds, if not thousands, of other visitors, but even the crowds could not damp... More

The hike from the parking lot to the top of the Cinder Cone is about 1.6 miles but we ended up doing close to 5 miles if you consider getting to the top, going into the crater and coming down on the other side and going around the cone to get back to the parking lot. I am not sure... More

The climb to cinder cone is not an easy one, even for grown ups - but the scenery from above is spectacular. Young kids might find it too difficult and the wind can be notorious (we had 40 knits gusts)

It took us a while to drive to this part of Lassen Volcanic Park but the time spent in the car and on the dirt road was well worth it. The hike to Cinder Cone starts through a nice forest area, alongside Butte Lake and great piles of lava rock on a surface of black sand that varies from not... More

From the trail head you walk through about a mile of relatively-flat terrain to the base of the Cinder Cone. Climbing up to the top of the cone from the base took about 30 minutes, while coming down took less than 10 minutes. Definitely wear some hiking shoes as you are hiking on loose volcanic debris (pumice-like stones) and you... More

PS: Not sure why Cinder Cone is wrongly listed in Mineral, CA. Cinder Cone is in the remote North Eastern section of Lassen Volcanic NP in the Butte Lake area. Mineral is town several miles outside the South Western entrance to Lassen VNP. This attraction should be listed in Lassen Volcanic NP, in place of (or merged with) the Fantastic... More

It is a tough climb up the loose gravel/lava to the top of the cinder cone. The view from the rim looking out at the Fantastic Lava Flow and the Painted Dunes is wonderful. The interior of the cone is fascinating as well.

One must hike up a cinder cone in Lassen to get an expansive view of the unique cinder cone area in the park. The hike is pretty tiring since it is essentially like walking on sand. There is no shade on the hike, so be prepared with lots of water!
