Our first visit to the Harvard University campus. Lots of students and families around on Sunday afternoon. Walking through Harvard Yard, we came across the John Harvard statue, surrounded by a crowd, watching as individuals and groups took their photos with John! Quite entertaining!!

Something that should be done while in Boston. Just walking around the campus has a wicked feeling. Fun to see all the high school students visiting and presenting their respects to this statue for good luck in their application.

I suppose its a must see because everyone was looking at it. And of course touching the foot. All of the greasy oils from people's hands polish it to a shiny gleam. Yuck. Considering the statue's location, everyone passes by so its the tourist attraction that you can't avoid. I did not see anyone pee on the statue but the whole area was dirty.

Statue like a statue. You can go there and take a picture. That's all. It will take you less than 5 minutes :)

If you visit Harvard, you just have to see the statue of John Harvard outside University Hall, even though it has three inaccuracies: (1) there was no known likeness of John Harvard so a student sat for the pose, (2) John Harvard was not the founder of the College, just the donor of his library, and (3) the College was founded in 1636, not 1638. But, hey, this is the era of "fake news" so the statue just fits in. Take a photo, burnish his left shoe, and then continue the tour of the Yard.

Just takes a moment. But it is a ‘must do’ when in Cambridge is to walk through Harvard Yard and pay your respects to John Harvard and run his shoe.

It’s a statue. That’s about it. Everyone wants to touch the shoe... I wouldn’t. People urinate on it.

So go. Stand nearby. Watch the endless tours of anxious high-schoolers and their hopeful parents approach, clutch John Harvard’s shoe “for luck,” and take earnest wishful photos. There’s no way to stop them, even though you know that one of the senior Harvard graduation goals every year is to pee on John Harvard’s shoe. Seriously. I’m a Harvard parent. Countless students do it. You don’t want to touch that shoe!

Even though it is a must stop at Harvard it is a bit inaccurate., However, visitors beware. Our guide said the students do leave a little umm mark on the statue so although rubbing the foot is tradition, I did not Attempt! Great photo op though!

This iconic statue is at the center on any visit to Harvard Yard. Be sure to snap a photo of your family members touching the foot of the sculpture for good luck. Ask someone to tell you the story behind the statue.
