This musuem does a good job laying out both the prewar years and events and a yearly historical timeline of events during the war itself. Also present is a very well done yearly historical timeline of events during the war itself.

This was my first stop on my trip to Richmond and I have to say it is a very nice museum. It was a little smaller than I expected but it is laid out in chronological order. They tried their hardest to keep things balanced...More

Was prepared to be blasted with rhetoric about the War of Northern Aggression but instead found a fairly balanced view of the causes of the civil war. The interactive movie was good with explaining the causes and how they all involved slavery. Some things were...More

The parking lot here is shared by both the NPS Site (free) and a paid Museum. Both are excellent in their own right, and worth the visit. The American Civil War Museum used to be called the Museum of the Confederacy, and that perspective is...More

Try not to get confused by various reviews and geographic proximity: this is NOT the Civil War Visitor Center, which is the free and outstanding National Park site next door. THIS is the private American Civil War Museum, which will set you back 12 bucks...More

The exhibit really tells the entire story of the Civil War including what leads up to it and the aftermath, In that its very well done, and it uses rare artifacts to help tell that story. But, at some point it had a strong whiff...More

The complaints are full of it. Visiting a place like this is more about the landmark than just lighting and signs, it's about being in a significant place. Both museums are great and help you get a feel for what it must have been like...More

Traveling from Arizona, we were very excited and made a point of visiting this museum. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. The exhibits look half done, are extremely dark, descriptions are hard to read and the content is not worth the effort. I've heard this museum...More
