We have visited this at least twice when family members are in town. It is a very historic structure, and the tours are always well done. There is a small gift shop and a relatively new addition (now the main entrance).

There is a lovely walk through the grounds of the Capitol. It is worth walking to view the statues, and the grounds, and the lovely architecture of the building itself.

Parking can be a trick, even with metered parking lots downtown. This sits in the middle of a 240-year-old state capitol, after all.

It was a beautiful park like setting with wonderful statues. We walked around the entire area and got a look at the home of the govener. Was very impressed.

My wife and I appreciated the most informative tour led by a thoroughly knowlegable and entertaining docent. We saw the refurbished room and features and learned about the historical background of this capitol building in Richmond.

I don't think you have to prearranged tours. They take place at various times throughout the day.

Check their website. Hours, etc. are posted. We had a guided tour on Easter Sunday, so I would guess that they would be open on Thanksgiving weekend. You could also call the capitol.
