WBTS History

I love touring and walking through these historical sites. Every one of them is different but still manage to remind of of the WBTS

This battlefield is great. Arrived early in the morning a only a few people there. There are paths through the woods you can walk with historical markers. There are also cannons that are not sealed, one even had a blue birds nest inside. This is a must for Civil War history buffs and even those who aren't.

The story about the battle at Gaines' Mill is sobering. It is hard to visualize that as beautiful and peaceful as it is now. The park is in excellent shape. You have to get off the beaten path to find it. But it is worth the effort.

Nice walking trail that is well marked and easy to follow. Pinned in by private property so watch the signs. There is an extended walk that is supposed to lead to a view but the bushes were so high nothing could be seen.

Toured as part of the Civil War Trust Annual Conference on 4 June . Amazing how close to Cold Harbor battlefield so be sure to see both.

The NPS owns a small portion of the land over which this large battle was fought. When taking the walking trail, you will learn that CSA troops charged down the relatively steep slope of a hill opposite the creek, in an attempt to overrun Union troops aligned in three tiers on an even steeper slope where the trail is. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop - otherwise not really worth it. Nice small battlefield in the Richmond area.

I was in the area primarily to visit the Cold Harbor Battlefield and was told of the Gaines Mills Battlefield while at the visitor center at Cold Harbor. Gaines Mills has no visitor center of its own. Suffice to say, after touring Cold Harbor, Gaines Mills was anticlimactic, with few markers and little to see other than a few cannon... More

This site is near Cold Harbor Battlefield but it is part of the 1862 Seven Days Battles tour. When I was there late in the day I was alone and the farm field was eerily quiet, but once you start the path you realize that this was one of the bloodiest small battles of the war. With a combined total... More

The Gaines' Mill Battlefield is adjacent to its better known one, the Cold Harbor Battlefield. In fact, Gaines' Mill shares the visitor's center at Cold Harbor which is how I found out about it. The battlefield is easy to find, just take a right from Cold Harbor and follow the signs. Make sure to observe the speed limit leading to... More
