I've visited this place a few times over the decades and really enjoy it. It is brief, but it gives one a great idea of how the South strategically defended Richmond during the American Civil War.

Hot, steamy morning after T-storms last night. Pleasant 1/2 mile walk along paved & gravel trail to earthworks overlooking the James River. Squirrels, woodpeckers, butterflies, and dragonflies among the wildlife seen. Very quiet, secluded from I-95. Helpful interpretive signs and 1 cannon and great view....More

While the "fort" still exists, you will have to use your imagination to view what it looked like in 1862 as the mounds used for daily life and holding munitions have caved in. You are still walking in the same steps as soldiers and the...More

My wife and I are Civil war buffs and one of the most enjoyable experiences we have on our trips from one battlefield to another is when the site is virtually unchanged from the way it was in 1861-65, like Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg and Shiloh....More

Drewry's Bluff is a Confederate stronghold overlooking a bend in the James River, just downstream from Richmond. The one-mile trail takes you to this location, which is part of the Richmond National Battlefront Park. The first quarter mile is paved, followed by a fairly well-groomed...More
