Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

Wonderful experience! My 12yr old is a rock hound who loved sifting through the creek pebbles to find gold and lots of garnet! Got to meet Rattlesnake Randy too. Alana was wonderful showing how to pan. Thanks! We could have spent hours here. My girls loved the shop.

My son begged to go here to get gold. It was fun to experience at least once, but pricey. Nice large gift shop.

I wanted to respond to your review. I appreciate your good responses. I feel that our prices are some of the lowest prices for tours and panning in the Black Hills. $9.95 for panning and you may even share the pan. Gold Guarenteed. Thank you for coming. Sandi More

We came up from TX and loved the tour and history of the gold mine. My kiddos (15,11&9) including my hubby enjoyed learning how to pan for gold. The entire staff was welcoming and helpful. Will totally do it again if we ever make our way back to SD.

Great tour and wonderful staff, ready to answer any questions and very friendly! Great with the kids and assisting them in finding gold to take home as souvenirs! Had a blast with the family!

We had never been in a cave. Our intelligent experienced guide told us so much. Also about people playing important parts in Keystones history. We learned all about the cave and mining process. Then, you can pan for gold in the front. Great fun!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Big Thunder Gold Mine in Keystone. The guide the not only knowledgeable & informative, but had a wonderful sense of humor. We visited there with the grandkids, ages 5 & 11 and it really kept their interest. The tour is not too long and quite pleasant. We learned a lot in a short period... More

Our guide,Jesse, took us on a tour of an actual gold mine and related the story of the two miners who had mined it. Fascinating and he did a great job answering our questions. I will never envy gold miners again! Also tried panning for gold. Didn't spend much time at it but found a bit of gold. The giftshop... More
