Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

We had a blast mining at Big Thunder. Everyone was very polite, knowledgeable, respectful of our wishes were to dig dirt, and friendly. The only complaint I have is that we were mining an old tailing pile. Your chances are that great of finding any...More

The history and just entering an actual Gold mine was thrilling, but add the panning opportunity, the gift shop, and the family restaurant you have a thrilling event to attend. Take your significant other, and/or family and enjoy at your leisure. Spend a couple of...More

Sandi and the staff did a great job explaining what to wear and to expect on the adventure. Trenton gave some history of the area as we walked a short distance to the claim site. We dug into the hill for some "good stuff" and...More

There is a tour of the 680 foot shaft of an abandoned gold mine and of a shed with old processing equipment. The tour is very informative--you learn a lot about gold mining. Our guide, Alana, made sure it was also interesting and fun. (In...More

Alana is fantastic, and she loves people and rocks. Thank you for the input and yes claustrophobic people can have some problems, but the path is straight and 8 ft wide and 8 ft. tall. Hallways are fairly consistent. 860 feet. Sandi

The tour was quite interesting and really gave us an idea of the struggles but optimism experienced in search of gold. Alyssa or ferret foot, our guide was kind, ready to answer questions, and offered to take our photos. The length of the tour was...More

Thank you for the good review. Alissa is wonderful as many of guides are. She makes it very interesting. A true example of the real west in the 1890's. Come back again. Sandi

It is out of the ordinary and thank you for coming and the monumental review. A true example of how the miners worked so hard on a daily basis and in water when it is cold. Sandi
