Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

My husband and I brought our 2 boys, ages 7 and 9, to Big Thunder for the gold mine tour and onsite gold panning. Our tour guide, Jennifer, was excellent. She kept the kids engaged, and was a wealth of information-well worth the 45 minutes!...More

Trenton was a great guide. He lead us out to the claim and showed us how to dig the dirt, sluice and pan. We came home with some SD gold.

I recommend the tour! Very knowledgeable tour guide that threw in some humor to make the "history lesson" worth it. I don't recommend toddlers, it's dark and you walk through the mine. There were a few toddlers in our group that whined the entire time.

The experience started with very courteous phone contact on our initial inquiry. Four-hour panning for gold with Trenton was great for Josh, Caiden, Gage and Jon. Eight nice size pieces of gold in the bottle. Trenton said three or four was the norm--these guys did...More

Read the website thoroughly to know what to expect. I took my three grandchildren, ages 15, 13, and13. Two of them liked it, one not so much. I count that a success for that age group. However, they have all eliminated claim panning as a...More

I read great reviews about Big Thunder Gold Mine and so we all went expecting to have a lot of fun panning for gold. We paid too much for a small pan of rocks and dirt. We did find a couple of specks of gold,...More

We only did the mine tour, not panning for gold. It was ok for something quick to do. Didn't realize it was just a short tunnel for a couple of guys gold mining for a hobby. Wouldn't go again.More

Thank you for your input. Yes this mine was their "hobby" mine but they also worked the Bismark because of the necessity to survive. It was not easy to be a miner in 1892. 90% of all miners left just as poor as they came....More
