Overview
More
Lonely Planet voted the West Coast Wildlife Centre in the heart of Franz Josef as one of the 12 must see things to visit in New Zealand. This is the largest kiwi hatching facility in the South Island and the "must see" indoor all weather attraction in Franz Josef – home to the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. See live kiwi during the day inside our nocturnal house, discover the interactive glacier attraction and West Coast storytelling areas or go behind the scenes on the “Backstage Pass Tour” and see live kiwi chicks and meet the friendly kiwi ranger staff. Numbers are very limited on the 30 minute Backstage Pass Tour so booking are highly recommended to avoid disappointment. The best shopping in Franz Josef can be found here inside the all weather facility -and enjoy free Wi-Fi in the cafe to keep connected to family and friends. Enjoy a coffee or a snack in the cafe – or pick up a pack lunch for your day of adventure. Open from 8.30am daily – 365 days. Set aside 1-2 hours for your visit. All tickets purchased are valid for 24 hours so you can come back and see the kiwi as many times as you like within that period !.

The coffeeshop and gifts tore together are bigger than the Kiwi area. Once you paid the entry fee you enter a long and dark corridor. On one side is a sort of terrarium with 3 kiwis. Let your eyes adjust to the dark and you...More

$38 NZ dollars each to view 2 Kiwis in almost darkness (red light) as they are nocturnal and a few lizards. There were screens to view with tales of their life and Info boards to read but somehow it didn't quite thrill me. No photos...More

There is not much to do when it is raining cats and dogs, this place was a nice reprieve from outside. Our first place to see a live Kiwi.

We were disappointed by this attraction. We did the basic tour which mostly consisted of walking through dark tunnel and not being able to see the one kiwi that was in there. The other exhibits are about the same quality as you get for free...More

We visited here last week. We booked to see the kiwi and were so lucky to see a two day old chick being moved from the incubation unit. It was just so cute. I have nothing but admiration for the work being done here.More

I was really disappointed by this visit. Firstly by the attitude of the lady on the ticket desk. I politely asked if there was military discount (they do senior/student discount) and was greeted with a look which basically said "wtf". Secondly, whilst the kiwi enclosure...More

If you couldn't see the Kiwi's in the first room then the whole experience could take you a max of 15 minutes. Save your money and go to the one at Queenstown. Was very disappointing.More

We went for the Kiwi experience which was very informative thanks to the tour guide (Isabella) who was very friendly and professional. We spent around 2-3hrs inside the facility (including souvenir shopping and lunch - menu can be improved with respect to variety of foods)....More
