17,000 Years of Continuous Human Habitation! Welcome to Ocmulgee National Monument. This park is a memorial to the relationship between people and natural resources. Native Americans first came here during the Paleo-Indian period to hunt Ice Age mammals. Several cultures occupied this land for thousands of years, each creating their own history here. The Mississippian culture arrived here around 900CE and constructed mounds for the elite members of their society. Today the mounds remain for all to see and explore.

The ranger in charge today was one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve met concerning Indian history and lore. Amazing site and I wish we had time to walk the 5 mile trail.

Heard about this monument and so glad we went. The movie and history stations are excellent. Really a easy hike and it gives you the ability to vision how they build this. A part of our history you want to experience.

Thanks for your response! Georgia certainly can be hot this time of year... the joys of the South! What could we have done to make your visit a 5 point review instead of 3?

I've been to the Kolomoki mounds park, but this was much more impressive. The big mound was thoughtfully made accessible with switchback stairs that offered lovely views on the way up to the breezy flat top of the mound. Really, do stop by the visitor's...More

This small national monument is located just off Interstate 16 in Macon. The grounds are very well maintained, and the park was not crowded. There are about a dozen mounds, all within easy walking distance. The whole site can be visited in an afternoon. There...More

So glad you enjoyed your visit! We hope you visit us again soon! One quick note-the Earth Lodge floor has been dated back 1000 years, not 5000. That would be even more amazing!

From their website: Pets are allowed on the park grounds on a leash. Pets are not permitted in the visitor center unless they are a service animal. Just google it and you'll usually find the answer.

Previous responses are all valid points. Mounds themselves might be a challenge with a wheelchair but doable. The excavated floor mound with viewing Windows probably not an option as entry is low and narrow. The Visitor... More
