Easy hike with outstanding scenery plus goats and mongooses galore! My wife and I stumbled on the trail and beach picnic area by accident when visiting the national park. If you drive to the beach, it’s very beautiful and was unexpected. We went along the ocean trail which intersects with the 1871 trail. The surf crashing on the lava was really visually striking. Hike down to the ramp and see the great views from above.

Here's a great day: Park at the Park and go snorkeling FIRST thing in the morning at Two-step. Then visit the main part of the National Historic Park and get your 1871 interpretive guide sheet. Plan ahead and bring a picnic lunch. Then, drive past the main park building to Alahaka beach to find a pleasant, shaded picnic table with a gorgeous view of the surf and some tide pools.
Now, take a walk back into history, with far fewer people than the short loop up at the main part of the Park. Spectacular ocean vistas and interesting ruins.

Very interesting, good trail markers, several points of interest to explore, absolutely picture-perfect coast views. This trail is most easily accessed from the Puuhonua o Honaunau National Park ($5 fee per vehicle) and the park gives out a trail map with information. The picnic area at the park is a good, safe place to park and the port-a-potties there are amazingly clean with absolutely NO smell. Wear closed shoes as the lava can cut toes and there are some thorny branches.

We did this hike after touring the park. The trail is sand and lava chunks, so wear good sturdy shoes. It was hot at 9:30, so do bring water. The gift shop has a nice one page description of the various historical stops along the trail. The views of the ocean are very nice. If you are in the area, do not miss this hike.

Ask at the National Park gift shop for the trail map. Hike the first 3/4 mile to see the Hawaiian sled slide, lava curtain and Akala ramp. At the top of the ramp is a bench to lookout over the ocean-great place for a photo. be sure to wear a hat, sunscreen, good walking shoes and take a bottle of water.

This is a cool trail that offers a diverse landscape. The Noni trees are an odd site and gave off the odor of rotting cheese (in my opinion). There is also an incredible view of an undeveloped hillside and breathtaking views of Hawaii's magnificent coastline. The only down side, the numbered markers for the interpretive brochure are hard to spot. It would be great to see the park replace these. Otherwise, it's incredible.

We really enjoyed this hike - historic sites, great views and lots of places to stop and enjoy the beauty. You can access this trail two ways - upon entering pu'u'honaunau Historical park - head towards the picnic area. The 1871 trailhead is along the road on your left. We went into the picnic area where the coast trailhead is (very end of picnic area) - this walk joins up to the 1871 trail and has some great, fairly isolated sandy areas you can enjoy. We walked to the end of the trail, which is marked by a post and a washroom facility! However, the path keeps going and we walked for a long while afterwards along the old volcanic rock trail, that was developed a long time ago for horses and mules (and that was updated from a much smaller path from even earlier times). If you walk far enough, you will see a clearing on the left which is being turned into a housing development. If you turn around and start walking back, you will see a path on your left (not marked or extremely well used - but a path nonetheless) that we followed to find a small sandy area an volcanic rocks where you can watch the water crash into the rocks - very secluded. Early on during our hike, we encountered a large herd of goats on the path that let us pass by. Don't miss the ancient rock incline that was considered a masterpiece of engineering. Take your time and enjoy this hike.

Great scenery! The path can be a little rough at times and it is for the most part out in the open and shade free so bring water.
I would recomend good sturdy shoes and in some spots you are walking over lava and un even surfaces.

If you don't mind hiking over rocky dried lava, this hike is really excellent. It takes you along the coast which is pretty secluded. It's quiet, fairly flat but tricky because of the uneven rocks which are quite sharp, with views of the turquoise waters. Lovely spot.

This is a wonderful National Park and an important cultural site with a great hike along the coast cliffs on the 1871 trail. About 1km along the trail is a park bench where you can sit and enjoy the waves crashing on the rocks and gaze out on the ocean. See relaxing.
