Very nice base, though more traffic assistance could be used during graduation week. Airmen were very kind in offering assistance when asked.

Retired Navy 20 Years ago, frequenting this base once or twice a week for business/recreation. Clean & friendly. Watch your speed since the Security forces has their school here- then need plenty of training :). Selection is limited in the BX/Commissary but fits most people's...More

The airman run, coin ceremony and graduation were heart warming, emotional, awesome, and made us proud to be an American. Get there early for parking, seating, and if you want to be in the center for the airman's run. After the airman run and coin...More

This USAF base is so beautiful. The grounds are so clean and well kept. The Gateway Restaurant has the best food on the buffet. And the building is gorgeous.

What a beautiful base, the dorms are immaculate, the grounds clean, the Airmen polite. We visited the store and the golf course for dinner.

So much Air Force history and military history to review, enjoy, experience. One of the several military installations in San Antonio; great stop for Military or History buffs. May be a challenge to get on base with all the security issues going on.

Are you going with anyone who is active/retired military? If not, I believe the only way to tour the base is with a school or organization that has made a formal request. To my knowledge, the general public isn't allowed... More
So am I understanding correctly, the base is open for civilians to tour? I attended basic training in 1989 and have not been back since. We are planning a spring break trip to SA. We just need to get a pass and we can tour the base? I would love to have the rush of those memories...dang, I feel old!

The best advice I can share is to check with the Visitor's Center at the gate. Someone there should be able to help you get on board. Be ready with id's and proper vehicle information. Welcome back!!

Do you need a special pass to get on base and take a tour?

Thank you both for your service! Yes -- but it shouldn't be a problem. Lackland has lots of civilian visitors. You'll need standard ID docs: driver's license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration (rental... More
