Seriously, New Mexico is amazing. Here you have thousands of ancient petroglyphs less than a mile from a paved road, 20 minutes from Santa Fe, with mesa-top hiking, dog friendly, and you will probably be the only person there.

We enjoyed our hike out to the petroglyphs. The scramble up the lava rock to actually see them was worth the effort, but I did keep wondering when a snake was going to get me. We thought the petroglyphs were wonderful and really enjoyed seeing...More

Our friends hike La Cieneguilla Petroglyph Site from time to time. This was an imaginable experience for me. I only saw pictures of petroglyphs in books. To do this and see these petroglyphs was a highlight of the vacation for me. The hike can be...More

Our decision to walk through the Petroglyph Site was last minute but worth it. The "trail" required you to pick through the rocks as you climb upward. I am in good shape but not young and I was able to enjoy the climb. If you...More

Very interesting ! Amazing that these images have lasted to stand the tests of time for us to still get to go see and appreciate. Definitely go for the (relatively easy) hike and see all the wonderful images

This is a great hike/wander with tons of petroglyphs on tall lava rock walls. The trail is a bit harrowing - i highly recommend using a pole on the way down, but our group of seniors did just fine. As others have stated, there are...More

This is totally free! Want to see some of the local history in Santa Fe area? Then head here. The hike starts out really flat, but you realize about half a mile down the trail you will be headed up. The hike up can be...More

There is a gravel parking area on the west side of the road and a BLM sign. I do not recall any posted hours...we got there about 8 a.m. and there were folks coming off the walking trail then. I would suggest you need to... More

Some are recent fakes/copies. Most are more than 700 years old. There are no interpretive signs, so research before you go.
