The tour will take you 300 feet below the earth into the pitch blackness old-time miners, some as young as seven or eight, had to face. While you won’t have to deal with poisonous gases, you will feel the chill. The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open from April 1st through November 30th and is closed only on Thanksgiving Day.

I took my daughter and her two sons there during my visit to their home in NY. My husband's grandfather was killed in a coal mining accident in 1919 and I wanted to introduce the boys to that part of their heritage. The tour was interesting and informative. The boys especially enjoyed the ride down into the mine. Our tour... More

Hubby, 17 year old son and I just got back from Scranton and this was one of our stops. All three of us had a terrific time at this extensive facility dedicated to educating folks about coal mining. Before the tour you can view a movie about coal mining in the area. Then, when your tour is called you grab... More

Ride in an actual coal car to learn about mining and the history of the area. The mine is cool so a jacket or sweatshirt is needed.

A trip to northeast Pennslvania wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Lackawanna County Coal Mine tour. This tour of about one hour places you in an electric coal mine car and takes you underground to view how coal was mined many years ago. It provides excellent guides who provide a most interesting tour through an actual mine and... More

You will get a glimpse into the past of what the brave men endured to mine coal. Without this resource, many industries would not have been able to flourish. Anthracite Coal was the key to connecting the east and west coast via railroad because of its high heat when burned. If you are at all interested in the history of... More

See live and up close the atmosphere of a coal mine. Experience the damp cold of a mine. Gives you a regard for what many men experienced in the past in the area; especially enlightening is the exposure to 4 feet high mines that existed. I was told many stories by my dad who worked the mines all his adult... More
