Commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899, architect Stanford White modeled Rosecliff after the Grand Trianon, the garden retreat of French kings at Versailles. After the house was completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million, Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainments here, including a fairy tale dinner and a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini.

Beautiful Mansion!

All of the Newport mansions are beautiful, but I think I particularly liked this one best because of the well-known movies that were filmed at Rosecliff.

Rosecliff is by far the most interesting mansion that the preservation society owns. It's a good tour that is informative and doesn't take that long. Would recommend to anyone who wants to see a cool mansion in Newport.

Very majestic and the opulence is astounding. For a movie buff this was nice to hear that True Lie was filmed there. Would love to explore more of the house but sadly off limits at this time.

While I wish they would soon make their tours audio led as the guides are a little 'rambly,' this is one of the prettiest mansions in Newport. The grand stairs that shape to a heart? Stunning! Absolutely, a must see, though I suggest going in one of the warmer months, even September is chilly by the water, but the views... More

Even in February, a visit to Rosecliff is enchanting. The architecture and furnishings are, of course, exquisite but the story of Tessie, the nouveau riche society matron who created it, brings its Gilded Age history to life. The iPad mini audio tour is quite good, especially for getting all the scoop on artifacts, lifestyle and scandal (no shortage of that... More

While the structure itself is beautiful, there is almost no furniture inside, and what is there is later stuff, not the gilded age stuff. What makes some of the other mansions special is the total visual impact of what life was like for the families that first used them.

If you want a glimpse of what it must have been like to be rich in Newport back in the early 1900's, then Rosecliff is another great example. The self guided tour was affordable and took about 30 minutes. It was also very informative. We enjoyed it.

My friends and I went to Newport today to visit some of the mansions. All were so beautiful!! Definitely worth a trip. We took the servants life tour at the Elms which was quite interesting. Our tour guide, Jill, was great. While at Rosecliff, we met one of the staff members, George Holland, who was a delight. He answered our... More

This one of the least beautiful one. They have nice ballroom, but otherwise - very little of beauty. You may enjoy learning about yachting from an exhibit upstairs, but not much more. The staff is rude because they do not like kids to walk stairs or adults taking pictures on it. (Other properties have no objection to either). So do... More

This is my favorite houses on the mansion tour. Elegant and understandable. Rosecliff has romance, a history of endearing ownership, and an edearing quality. It is relatively modern in contrast to the other more Victorian and 'ultra-elite formal' of the other homes. Highly recommend.
