Walking tours can be hit and miss. The walking tours provided by Newport Historical Society and Newport Restoration Foundation are a knockout. There is much more to Newport, Rhode Island than just the gilded mansions of the wealthy. This rich history is brought to life by well studied and charismatic guides with consistent quality. Three tours are offered in the... More

Our tour guide was a wealth of information and made Newport really come alive historically. Everyone learned more about Newport than they anticipated even family who lived nearby. I would go back on the same tour again because there was so much to take in. Our guide even managed to engage my 10 year old grandson for the one and... More

We searched diligently for large group activities (25 adults), and found one in the Newport Historical Society's "Colonial Newport" walking tour. Our guide (Pat?) knew her history, along with the legends and lesser known facts. She was conscientious of finding shady spots for our stops, and made sure that we could all hear. The tour gives a good overview of... More

Our guide was so knowledgeable and explained such different pieces of history than your typical tour.

We have visited Newport many years in mid-April and many of the attractions are not open. We happened on these walking tours last year and did the Gilded to Golden tour. This year the tour that was offered was Rogues and Scoundrels. Last year we had a group of 12 or so. This year we were the only ones, so... More

We actually visited this location but the building was under renovation. The Head of the Newport Historical Society took time out from his renovation (they were painting) to tell us about the Newport History and the activities of the Historical Society. They take great pride in their history and preserving it both physically and emotionally. From here, we visited the... More

Our guide, a young redhead, was just fantastic. She was full of interesting facts as we walked through town. Wish I could remember her name, as she was just the best! This tour was the highlight of our time in Newport. Our tour of Colonial Newport the next day with a different guide was not nearly as good, and repeated... More

We took the "Discover Colonial Newport" tour and found it very informative. Excellent tour guide, good variety of stops (connected to religious and political history), and a reasonable length and pace. Altogether quite enjoyable and worthwhile.

Sorry to say that this tour of the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House was pretty boring. We had a variety of ages in our group and it just was not holding our interest. The Colony House was more interesting to see yet the tour could have been more insightful.

We took two tours from these folks, each with a different guide. One was outstanding, the other okay, and both added to our enjoyment of Newport. When we asked for tips on places to eat, both guides gave us good tips. And the museum upstairs in the Society's Brick Market building is compact and interesting.
