Did this hike before sunrise at around 6:00am. The trail looked pretty intimidating at first but I found it to be challenging and very good. My wife, who is 5 months pregnant completed the hike - there were some sketchy spots and definitely took our time and was very cautious but I recommend this hike 100%. I would avoid doing... More

We took up our 3 year old (in a toddler carrier) with us. Took us about 50 mins from the carpark to the top, but we are fit hikers. The trail is uneven and steep, you need proper shoes and some fitness to manage this. Views are worth it.

I won't repeat what everyone else said, but I did benefit reading others' tips. I wish I had better tread on my shoes. Many times you're stepping up (later down) 2 feet or more. I'm 58 and proud I made it! I mountain bike and do other exercise regularly. I believe that really helped me. If I can, so can... More

This knocked it out of me. We did Diamond Head just before deciding to head up to the Koko trail and we were so underwhelmed by the DH "hike" that we thought this would be similar. It was not. It was like doing continuous lunges up a mountain, my legs were dying and it was so hot that I had... More

Hi - I'm 30+yr old female of above mid level fitness & I went with a male friend of same age. We left Waikiki at 6am and arrived at 6:30am. To our advantage, it was not hot or sunny at this time of day. If you go by car, turn into Lunalilo Home Rd and right into Anapalau st until... More

Amazing views from the top and totally worth the strenuous hike! Please wear appropriate closed-toe shoes and bring water. The "steps" are railroad cross ties (widely spaced) and the trail is crazy steep. My 12-yr reached the top a good 30 minutes before I did. Slow and steady...

This is a gorgeous hike with a spectacular view that is all the more rewarding after the hike up. I think it's about a mile, but has a 1000 ft elevation gain. The trail is along old railway tracks, so steps are inconsistent in length, but generally longer than a normal stride. I wouldn't recommend going down in the dark.... More

This hike was literally stairs (an old train track) up the side of a mountain. At one point, there is a bee hive, so you can travel below or around the track. Many people run up this narrow track, so beware if you are not the quickest climber. Recommended for those who are training or are not against a challenge.... More

Be prepared for a decent walk up to the top. The stairs get gradually steeper with a portion a near the top being elevated above the ground which tends to throw people off as there are gaps your foot can slip into. There is an alternative path through the bushes to get you around this area (highly advisable on the... More

I recommend hiking this at dark-thirty in the morning with a flashlight and celebrate not just sunrise, but also your accomplishment of making it to the top with its incredible views. (As one pulls into the parking lot, it's neat to see these flickers of light already ascending the staircase). You will break a sweat on this challenging hike which... More
