Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

wnet in late morning, avoided the "see the sunrise" crowd and secured good parking [sometimes a challenge there]. fairly gentle inclines, excellent views throughout the climb. Good for kids if not too young, easy on the body and all paved paths. /best to bring water, hat and sunscreen, doable bottom to top at relaxed pace in 1 hour. Great for... More

We walked this trail pushing our son in a pram. It is well paved and provides nice views of the island and ocean. It can get quite hot walking uphill but the views are lovely. The last part of the trial is stairs only.

We have traversed this hike many times over the years, and can highly recommend the experience to others. Our most recent visit included myself, my wife and four visitors from the mainland. It was a clear day, and we enjoyed looking for whales along the second half of the trip up the hill. One member of our group thought it... More

We had a lot of meetings, and just one afternoon with a bit of free time. Fortunately, this was in late March, when the Whales are migrating right near the coast. My local friend recommended this trail...it's a steep but paved climb...As we rounded the point, we were able to watch 2 pods (?) of whales moving along the coast.... More

We were there for 9:00 am. Go early, it was probably a 4 K walk round trip, completely paved. Steady uphill incline, no shade, no washrooms. . It was overcast when we were there which was a good thing. Outstanding views from the top.

We loved this hike. It is paved the whole way so just about anyone can do it. You get great views throughout and especially at the top.

My first tip is to slather on sunscreen before you attempt this hike. I made the mistake of not wearing any because we thought it would be a relatively easy trek up to the lighthouse. Boy, were we wrong! The trail is paved, but it is black asphalt, so it was incredibly hot the entire time. With a little better... More

This is a very windy hike and seemed to take forever but the views are definitely worth it! We had a blast and took some great pics! Saw a whale too!

This is a paved hike. You can bring a stroller or a bike. It is uphill all the way. They've been up keeping it, making it better. It s good to go early for parking. Bring water. Lots of happy hikers here. Great views. If you're lucky you'll see a whale.
