I had no idea!! Wow! This place is huge! We drove for about an hour maybe a bit longer. Stopped several places, especially the Illinois dome. Remarkable. Apparently this was started in 1904. Statues all over the place. We missed the graveyard unfortunately and to get to see it we'd have had to start at the beginning again. That's my... More

Each major Civil War battle site claims to be the pivotal battle. Vicksburg was important but the final outcome was anti-climatic. The whole area is ho-hum. The park is more of a place for each locality that sent troops to erect a memorial. It was never taken by Grant because the hills are steep and never-ending.

We went all the time when I was a young child, living in Vicksburg, but I really didn't understand or appreciate the history. I went back after about 15 years, after knowing the history of the south, it is a must if you are in Vicksburg! You can just imagine confederate soldiers laying in the trenches during the war... and... More

The drive through the park takes you first along the union lines and then through confederacy lines. The park is huge. There are monuments all along the way, and it's sobering to think of what it must have been like to wage battle here.

The drive through the National Military Park is a real treat - the beauty of the trees that overhang the small road provides along with all the monuments provides you with a great sense of nature and feeling of pride. Be sure to stop at some of the large monuments (the IL one) and walk up and through it. From... More

Great gem in Vicksburg. The park is open for cars from 8:00 to 5:00, but you can walk in or ride a non motorized bicycle during off hours. This park is not as crowded as your would find Gettysburg or Antietam. A 2 to 4 hours visit would give you a good overview of the park. The U.S.S. Cairo &... More

We visited the Vicksburg Military park and were very impressed with it! It has a lot of monuments and also an Iron Clad boat that has been raised from the Yazoo River and refurbished!! Very Interesting stuff!!!

A visit to this military park has been on my husband's bucket list for years. He finally got to check it off his bucket list. We already had the National Parks Senior Pass and it was easy to get in and it didn't cost us anything. My husband already had given me an overview of the history of the park... More

I wish we had more time! We did the driving tour which is very long and beautiful. It has tons of monument and cannons. There are signs in place which tell you who and what was where. They were apparently marked by soldiers who returned after the war. This is a must visit!

A beautiful display of a terrible event in the history of our country! No matter the "side" (Confederate or Union) one can "see" or imagine the battles and devastating loss of life on both sides!
