Beautiful tile work on floor. Good memorial to those fallen soldiers displayed by infantry. The roof is open to the sky so you might find yourself trying to figure out how it doesn't fill with water when it rains .Awesome echo inside the memorial-bring your singing voice! Nice photo stop too.

I find it interesting that not one TripAdvisor review mentions the fact that the name of this monument is listed incorrectly here. This structure is NOT the Vicksburg National Monument. It's one of dozens of monuments constructed by individual states whose citizens fought and died in the battles at Vicksburg. This particular monument was constructed by the State of Illinois... Beautiful but lots of steps. Good exercise. This is in the battlefield. We did walk up and take pictures.

Explore and immerse yourself in Civil War history. This monument is representative of other monuments scattered throughout the park. The battle for Vicksburg was strategic to both sides of the campaign. Take time to reflect on the many names inscribed on this monument. Highly recommend!

The Military Park has so many monuments and memorials to the many units engaged in the siege and the Cemetery with its endless markers, but the monument is outstanding, with its list of thousands of casualties during the long bloody battle.

Take a few minutes to step into the monument. Very impressive with over 30,000 names listed on bronzed walls. The monument is accessible via the 16-mile auto tour of the Vicksburg National Battlefield. Stop at the visitors' center first. National Park Service entry fees apply. America the Beautiful passes are accepted. The 20-minute introductory video presentation at the visitors' center... More

We visited this while driving through the Vicksburg Battlefield. It was an amazing structure from the inside. There is an opening in the top of the dome. It was very somber reading inscriptions on the walls.

Many large and "grand" monuments to regiments who fought, died and some survived, the terrible civil way that, to this day, continues to bring discord and unhappiness on both sides. These monuments remind of us those times. Some are grand done by states, some personal and small. A reminder of the tragedy of war.
