Mud Volcano is one of our most favorite areas in Yellowstone. Mud Volcano doesn't impress visitors with beautiful hot springs, exciting geysers, or colorful bacteria mats because it doesn't have any of these geothermal features. Mud puddles, mud ponds, mud lakes, the bubbling sounds, and their "rotten egg" smell are what make Mud Volcano unique, different, special, and attractive. If... More

Clearly the bison love this area and don't mind the smell or heat. One can see their hoof prints in the snow. The Mud Volcano is accessible by a narrow pathway. Well worth the stop and short walk.

Yellowstone is one of the "must do's" in US for good reason. The natural phenomena are spectacular. However we visited in july which was summer holiday time and it was total chaos. The road runs in a circular route with stops along the way for various view sights. Unfortunately the parking at each of the sites is inadequate and we... More

We spend a long time walking this area. It's really beautiful. The variety of colors and landscape... One of the highlights of Yellowstone.

Mud Volcano Area offers different Thermal features. Dragon Mouth Spring is the popular feature, Bubbling Mud Spot, Acid Lake, Churning Caldron are interesting and unique too. There is a short boardwalk which conveniently takes you to different features of the area, all however complimented by a characteristic pungent smell. Whole loop of the boardwalk may take upto 30 minutes or... More

It is easy to think everything is at the parking lot area. Go up the hillside boardwalk either way ... it is a loop with one spur. There is a great vista view coming back down to the parking lot.

Not the most majestic stop in Yellowstone, but still really neat to see the bubbling hot mud. Be warned, the sulfur smell is particularly strong in this area.

Went here on a Tuesday and it was just ok. I don't know if it was because we spent the day looking at hot springs done 50 different ways or the smell of the area. Therefore, my opinion is that I would have been happy to skip. Granted, I don't like giving anything in Yellowstone a marginal rating but seriously,... More

You could just stand there and watch these bubbles like watching a pot of sauce cooking on the stove.

The Mud Volcano area offers some of the most unique thermal features in Yellowstone, like bubbling mud pots and acid lakes. Dragon's Mouth Spring is the Mud Volcano area most popular feature. Churning Caldron is very interesting as well. Although not among the most beautiful, the area is quite impressive and deserves some time to explore. There is a short... More
