This is an old ampitheatre for opera and plays. We weren't able to see an opera, but I'd imagine if you like opera then it would be a great experience. You get a discount if you can show your tickets for another Macerata museum like the muses delle carozze.

I visited the Sferisterio during the day. You pay a modest fee at the desk at the entrance and are free to wander around to a limited extent. Opening hours are 09.00 to 16.00. There is a guided tour in Italian, which would have been ok for me but not for my friends. I have been shushed in other locations... More

Visited the site during a regular day in the opera season. The place is visitable and you can get in, stay for a while and take a few pictures. It was built for the an ancient national sport in Italy, the Pallone colbracciale, by the 19th century, between 1823 and 1829. As the popularity of the sport declined it has... More

The Sferisterio is a fascinating space for opera, concerts and theater. I would love to see a production there, especially of an Italian opera.

Italians come dressed to kill to Macerata's opera festival for 3 weeks in July and August. The Sferisterio has an enormous stage with casts of hundreds, usually filled out with local students. You can see it outside the opera season by booking a tour at the nearby tourist office when you will hear about its origins as a ball game... More

And I will do so, because I experienced the Sferisterio only in this respect; and even so I feel it as awe-inspiring. Mainly for two reasons. The first reason: that is beautiful in itself. Its beauty is almost metaphysical, with the long back wall and the equally long rows of boxes for spectators. It's true that the plastic chairs for... More

I'm more of a rock-jazz-tango music fan but seeing an Opera live at Sferisterio, was a very nice experience. Grate surroundings and I really liked the live music and to some degree the singing.

Fantastic season, great sound in a open air arena. La traviata was excellent, the stage was amazing so were the singers and dancers. Expensive but worth it.

Sferisterio is the lyric heart of Macerata. You can't miss the chance to visit it, no matter if it's opera or a concert going on. You'll be pleased <3
