I went for this walking tour after my Waitomo glowworm caves adventure. It is a lot of walking in this one (Glowworm is mostly a boat ride) so go with comfortable walking shoes and a jacket as it gets a little cold underground. I believe...More

This cave is definitely worth checking out as it allows you to see glow worms up close and photography is allowed. Our guide is very informative as well, explaining about the formation of the caves and the growth / life stages of a glow worm,...More

Photos do not do any justice for what you are about to experience. If you are like me and have no experience with caves, prepare to be wowed, to be inspired and view our wee planet in a completely different way. The two of us...More

The entrance to this cave gives you a better appreciation of how deep you are. Had great guides who told us a lot about the history! It was worth checking out!

It is handicap accessible, compared to the Waitomo glow worm cave – about a two hour tour. My mother says using a two wheeled walker, it worked out fine because the handholds were easy to use on the railings. You must be in fairly good...More

We booked the Ruakuri cave tour together with Waitomo Glowworm cave and Aranui cave. In this tour, you were allowed to take photos which makes it better since we love photos. You could see lots of stone formations like stalactites and stalagmites and others. You...More

The Ruakuri cave is located away from the main Glowworm cave. Transport can be arranged there and back. We did the tour on a Sunday morning 9am and we were the only two people on the tour. The guide didn't mind, but was very enthusiastic...More

Is this a bus to get there from Auckland? I saw the Intercity bus only goes to WGC.

Hi, I'm planning to make a trip to these Ruakuri Cave and/or WGC in Feb 2017 with my 2 year old and a 7 month old. I'll be staying in Matamata for 2 nights. I'm driving from Auckland straight to the caves and don't think I'll have time to do both in a day. So, I intend to do the Ruakuri on my day of arrival. I'll visit Hobbiton the next day and hopefully have time to visit WGC after that. Could someone advise if this is too rushed a schedule? How long would i need for Hobbiton to enjoy it in a leisure pace and how long would I need for these 2 caves to enjoy them in leisure pace too? Also, is there a better timing to visit these 2 caves or it doesn't make a difference be it day or afternoon? Is there cafes nearby for us to do lunch with our child too?
